Why Tim Tebow Will Win The Heisman
The defending National Champions had a realistic chance to go to the Sugar Bowl and win back-to-back titles, but it wasn't meant to be this season.
A 9-3 season record matches Urban Meyer's record from his first season, but the problem is expectations were drastically lower in 2005. The team was young but still had enough talent to at least have a rematch with the LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship Game. Gator Nation is still stinging from the loss to the average Auburn Tigers and the next time Florida and Auburn meet, Wes Byrum will get his payback. No opposing player does the Gator Chomp, especially in Gainesville.
The best thing about this season was watching Tim Tebow transform himself into SuperTebow in an instant. SuperTebow was still vulnerable to kryptonite – in this case, his defense. The defense let Tim Tebow down 3 times, not surprisingly resulting in the only three losses this season.
Tim Tebow should win the Heisman this year. ESPN analyst Mark May said it best, "Stronger than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet, it's Tim Tebow!"
Darren McFadden and Colt Brennan should admire what SuperTebow did this season. Tebow threw for 3,132 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 68.5% of his passes. He led the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 177.85. SuperTebow rushed for 838 yards and scored 22 touchdowns on the ground.
In total, Tim Tebow gained 3,970 yards and scored 51 touchdowns. The 51 touchdowns is a new SEC record that was set in 1996 when Danny Wuerffel scored 42 touchdowns on the way to the Heisman Trophy and a National Championship.
Tebow also became the first player in FBS history to pass for 20 touchdowns and run for 20 touchdowns. Tim Tebow carried the Florida Gators through the whole season. Percy Harvin helped some, but when the game was on the line, the ball was in Tebow's hands. The Heisman goes to the most outstanding player in the nation and Tim Tebow's body of work speaks for itself.
With a 9-3 record, being the third-best team in the SEC should get the Gators into the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. I wish it would go back to the Citrus Bowl since they still play it in the Citrus Bowl. A New Year's Day Bowl is a great reward for the Gators after going through the grueling SEC with a 5-3 record. A hopeful opponent for the Gators would be the Fighting Illini of Illinois. It would be a great game between two fast-paced teams, a chance to see Ron Zook, and two contenders for next year's Orange Bowl (National Championship Game). In case the Buckeyes make it to the Sugar Bowl and the Rose Bowl stretches to pick Illinois, Michigan or Wisconsin would show the lack of speed in the Big Ten.
Overall, the season could have been better, but Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin are coming back next year and the defense will have more experience. Look for big things next season and the Florida-Georgia game might be a matchup of #1 v. #2.
