Boilermakers. Get Psyched
It is about time to shake the lethargy as a boilermaker fan. Too long since the graduation of Orton has the Purdue offense looked lackluster. Remember the days when the offense was one of the most feared in the Big 10? Quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Kyle Orton led the machine, which constantly overpowered opposing defenses and kept them on their heels.
You might ask what was missing? What changes now?
In order to understand that, you need to understand the offense. Tiller, the founder of the playbook, was an innovator in the spread offense. As a disciple of the system, the current coach Hope has added slightly more short out-routes, a slightly more balanced attack, and a quicker calling system. The key component that is missing, which Tiller had, is a quarterback who can run reads and draws. A quarterback that is quick on his feet and agile as a cat. A quarterback that is great with short completions and can avoid sacks with the best of them. A quarterback like Brees or Orton, or MARVE.
Robert Marve. A Miami transfer, is finally eligible to play, and boy will he ever. While slightly undersized at only 6'1", this kid is fast. Not only that, but even more importantly, he is quick. In his short history with Miami, he had trouble taking care of the ball with more interceptions than touchdowns, but with the draw/short pass playbook of Purdue, there should be no doubt he is the ideal fit for the system. Expect him to be a "Terrelle Pryor" type without any of the old boring restrictions Ohio State puts on Pryor.
Not only should Purdue be expected to improve on a lackluster 5-7 record, but this is the year the offense restores Boilermaker pride. This year, Ohio State won't be the only upset. I hope you're ready for this. Get psyched!
