Very Supertitious: Soccer Player's and Coach's Superstitions

Jon SainzJun 18, 2010

From using the same clothing to praying, a lot of soccer players and coaches have some kind of a superstition.

It's nothing logical, but they firmly believe that some ritual they've made for a long time will bring them luck.

John Terry, former England captain, always sits in the same place on the bus, always listens to the same CD en route to the stadium, and he always ties a band three times on his socks.

German forward Mario Gomez once forgot to sing to the national anthem in the youth team, he scored a goal in that match and hasn't sing along to the anthem ever again.

Kolo Toure likes to be the last to enter the pitch. He received a yellow card because of it in an Arsenal vs. Roma game, as he was waiting for Gallas to enter, but the referee was tired of waiting.

Paul Ince was always the last guy to leave the locker room, he sprinted to the field, and once there he put his jersey on.

You will never see Ronaldo shoot towards the goal before the match. He does that because he doesn't want to "waste the goals." Gary Lineker did the exact same thing.

Some other guys use the same clothes.

Genaro Gatusso uses the same sweater since the first day, regardless of the weather or the temperature.

Mutu wears the same underwear for every game. Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita did the same, he always wore the same blue underpants; the ones he won the Libertadores Cup with.

Others use bandages.

In 1997, Argentinian Juan Sebastian Veron suffered an injury to his knee and had to play with it bandaged. Apparently it brought him luck, and always plays with a bandage on his knee.

Something similar happened to Ivan Zamorano, his hand ached, so he had it taped, he scored a hat trick in the game, and played with his hand taped ever since.

But it's not only about the players, the coaches have also superstitions.

Former Spain coach Luis Aragones hates yellow. Raul went to the hotel once with a yellow shirt and was immediately forced to change it.

French coach Raymond Domenech and former Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe, who in the 2006 World Cup wore dragon ties, both let their astrologer decide what tie to wear.

Carlos Bilardo always sat in the bench with a statue of the "Virgen de Lujan" and forbid his players from eating chicken. He also demanded strict clothing and the same seats in the buses for his players. And watch out if the driver didn't use the same route to the stadium.

Giovanni Trapattoni "showers" with holy water sent by his sister, who is a nun.

Aymore Moreira, Brazilian coach in 1962, always wore a shirt with a dragon in it; his son said that it helped him win games.

Mario Lobo Zagallo, former Brazilian player and coach, is a devotee of San Antonio, and since it's celebrated on June 13 he wore that number.

Laurent Blanc, now Bordeaux coach, said that he always kissed Barthez's head (picture) in the 1998 World Cup, and before the matches he used to listen to Gloria Gayno's "I Will Survive."

Do you know any other soccer player's or coache's superstition? If so, please leave a comment.
