The MLB Betting Market through 6/14: June 15th 2010
If you look at baseball betting as if it were the stock market, hereโs a look at what weโre buying and selling through another week of play on the diamond.
Bullish Squads
New York Mets (5-1, +$363) โ Does anyone realize that the Mets are just a game and a half back of first place in the NL East and are seven games above .500? It felt like just a few weeks ago that manager Jerry Manuel was already headed out the door, but thanks to a pitching staff that has only allowed either zero or one run in five of its L/8 games, the Big Apple is smiling once again for its Mets.
San Francisco Giants (5-2, +$300) โ Another team that is sort of coming out of nowhere to claw back into the playoff race, San Francisco has won four straight MLB betting battles. Four of the five starting pitchers for this team have ERAs of 3.12 or less, and any time that you can say that you have three starters with better ERAs than RHP Tim Lincecum on your staff, youโve got something really special.
Bearish Squads
Pittsburgh Pirates (0-6, -$600) - Now thatโs more like it! The Pirates are back in the gutter of the NL Central where they probably belong, as they are on an eight game losing streak. The summer is only inevitably going to get longer in Steeltown, as Pittsburgh fans start asking when the Steelers are going to start two-a-days. After all, there is a real question about what is more embarrassing right now: Averaging 3.24 runs per game or having a staff ERA of 5.23!
Seattle Mariners (1-6, -$525) - Then there are the Mariners, who are 16 games under .500, over 18 units in the hole for MLB betting fans, and underachieving like no one else in baseball for the second time in three years. Itโs only a matter of time until LHP Cliff Lee gets traded to a contender, and with RHP Felix Hernandez only at 4-5, things just donโt appear to be getting any better any time soon.
Player to Buy โ Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals: Now thatโs how you make a debut! Strasburg struck out 14 Pirates in his first start and eight Indians in his second, allowing just three total earned runs in 12.1 innings of work. The phenom for the Nats is already 2-0 on the year, which, if you want to put it in perspective, is the same number of wins that RHP Zack Greinke has all season long for the Royals.
Player to Sell โ Jamie Moyer, Philadelphia Phillies: Right now, weโre just selling the Phillies as a whole, but after watching Moyer give up nine runs in 1.0+ innings of work over the weekend, weโre wondering if itโs time for the old man to give it up and call it a career. Itโs always hard to back someone who canโt throw a fastball above 85 MPH anymore, and we may be being a tad bit generous with that speed. We wouldnโt want any part of this southpaw at 47 years old.
