While we are still months away from the NFL season, the 2010 NFL Draft is complete and teams are in the process of signing their remaining free agents, so what better time to get a jumpstart on the fantasy football season than now.  Here are my Top 5 Fantasy Football Draft List Tips that can help you become a winner in 2010.

Tips For Building Your Winning Fantasy Football Draft List

#1  Never draft a kicker with anything other than your last pick.

While this may be obvious to many who have played fantasy football before, this is the number one mistake that I see made by fantasy football rookies year in and year out.  The difference between the no.1 kicker and the no. 12 kicker in 2009 was only 2.6 points per game. Okay, there’s nothing wrong with an extra 2 to three points for your team every week, but this isn’t worth the risk of losing a valuable bench player.

QB’s, RB’s and WR’s are getting injured every week. You need to have a team with depth if you want to be successful in fantasy football. Personally, I go with my hunches and usually play a different kicker every week. Look at the scoring leaders for kickers in any fantasy league and you will notice the majority of the time there will be at least two or three kickers in the top ten at their position who are free agents. While kickers can get you valuable points at certain times, they are just not worth anything but a last round pick.

Now let;s move on to my second all time favorite Fantasy Football Draft List tip…

#2 Much like kickers, don’t get carried away picking a defense too early either.

Personally, I have been very successful by simply choosing a defense every week based on  weekly match-ups. It was assumed by everyone that the Steelers and Giants would be two of the top defenses in the league last year. Guess what? They finished 16th and 26th respectively among defenses in 2010.

Okay, no one expected Polamalu to get hurt for the Steelers and the Giants to be consistently banged up at every position, but this is the NFL.  Regardless of how these teams finished, the average difference per game between the top defense in 2009 and the no. 12 defense was a measly 2.8 points per game. This is hardly worth a mid round or early draft pick.

Choosing a defense anytime before your final three or four picks could have dire consequences should your starters be banged up for any considerable amount of time and you don’t have a player who you can plug in as a serviceable starter.

Ok that’s my first 2 tips to help you build your best Fantasy Football draft list for any year.  I hope this gives you a great head start for your 2010 fantasy football season.
