Conference Realignment: SEC Is Still King No Matter What Other Conferences Do
Larry Burton (Panama City Beach, Fla.): One thing that is already abundantly clear with or without all the conference re-alignment talk is that the SEC is the best conference for college football and will continue to be no matter what else happens.
Of all the BCS titles won since its first champion in 1998, no other conference has won more than one championship. Except for the SEC that is, which has won six of them and the last four in a row.
So no matter if conferences like the PAC Ten go from 10 to 20 members, they won't be the top conference in the NCAA, not even if they add 30.
For the ones who think I'm pandering to the SEC, the math is this: SEC, six; rest of the entire NCAA, five.
In other words, if a conference takes in every team but those in the SEC, they will still be the second best football conference in America. As the old saying goes, "No brag, just fact."
The fact that for the last four years, the SEC with four different schools has whipped the rest of the nation means that the SEC may be the strongest conference top to bottom against the entire NCAA.
You could argue, but facts would only make you look stupid in your argument.
With the imminent demise of the Big 12 conference and USC having their BCS title taken away, the only other conferences that can claim BCS titles will be the ACC with one and the Big Ten with one.
Miami won theirs while a member on the Big East, but they are now in the ACC.
The SEC has won six BCS crowns with five different schools hoisting the crystal ball. No other conference has more than once.
So while other conferences look to form "Super Conferences," they will be super in name only as long as the SEC continues playing football.
We've always had the true super conference, and that conference is the SEC.
