MLB Betting Trends: Bet The “Under” With These MLB Umpires: June 12th 2010

Handicappers PicksJun 11, 2010

BetUS Sportsbook continues its look at various angles that can help you cash in by analyzing the top ‘under’ umpires that you should be watching the next time that you have your eye on a pitcher’s duel. Our MLB betting angles check out the umps that are ‘under’ the gun.

Jim Wolf (1-11) – Wolf has been the consummate ‘under’ man that you want calling balls and strikes this season for you. He has at least 65.0 percent of his pitches called as strikes in six of his L/9 starts and continues to ring up batters left and right. Averaging 16.3 strikeouts per game is a ridiculous number. Run totals are all staying incredibly low as well, as only one time this year has a game reached double digits with Wolf as the head man in blue. Since that point on April 9th though, 11 games have been called, and 11 ‘unders’ have been logged.

Bob Davidson (2-11-1) – Timmons has been on a wild ‘under’ tear as well since the beginning of May. On May 4th, he called a 17 run game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since that point, no more than eight runs have crossed the plate under his watch, and the end result has been eight straight ‘unders’. The fact that Davidson only has a 2:1 K:BB ratio in his games this year is a bit alarming for a man that has called so many low scoring games, but the last time that a major strikeout pitcher was on the hill in a game that he called was LHP Jon Lester on May 25th.

Bruce Dreckman (3-9) – The last time that we addressed ‘under’ umpires, we suggested that Dreckman was perhaps in a situation where he was just running into some great pitching battles that were producing ‘under’ games. Since that point, he is just 2-2 on ‘totals’ and really has only had one remotely “elite” pitcher take the hill in his starts (that being Houston Astros LHP Wandy Rodriguez). The numbers just don’t add up right for Dreckman, as a 62.2 percent strike ratio and a 1.97 K:BB mark are lower than you’d like to see for a vintage ‘under’ umpire.

Dan Iassogna (3-9) – If you’ve been backing the ‘over’ in Iassogna-called games lately, you’ve been kicking yourself. This man in blue hasn’t seen more than seven runs cross the dish against him since May 2nd, which has resulted in seven straight ‘under’ duels. His strike ratio is significantly up since that point as well, especially considering the fact that he has had four of his L/5 starts behind the plate with at least a 66.0 percent ratio.

Mike Dimuro (3-8-2) – Life becomes a lot easier to call ‘under’ games when you have guys like Chicago Cubs RHP Carlos Silva, New York Yankees LHP CC Sabathia, Philadelphia Phillies RHP Roy Halladay, and Florida Marlins RHP Josh Johnson as four of the L/6 pitchers that you have seen. In fact, as a part of Dimuro’s nice 5-0-2 run for ‘under’ bettors, he called the perfect game for Halladay in South Beach.
