Mayweather Won't Be Pacquiao's Last Opponent In November

Leo ReyesJun 11, 2010

Floyd Mayweather Jr., won't be Manny Pacquiao's last opponent when the Filipino boxer finally retires from professional boxing this coming November.

Pacquiao, who is the reigning WBO welterweight champion earlier announced his retirement from professional boxing after his November fight to concentrate on his new task as legislator.

The popular Filipino boxer has just been elected Congressman of Sarangani province in southern Philippines during the May 10 national elections in the country.

Earlier, Mayweather announced his retirement from professional boxing during the, "Make a Wish Foundation," charity affair. He said he is, "taking a year or two off from boxing."

The controversial announcement created firestorm in the boxing community as the boxers' promoters Bob Arum, representing Manny Pacquiao and Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer are locked-up in intense negotiations for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight tentatively scheduled for November.

A few days after Floyd Mayweather's announcement, his uncle Roger Mayweather clarified Floyd's statement over a radio program interview and dismissed the notion of Mayweather walking away from the fight.

.“I don’t worry about that,” Roger stated. “He’s the one who said he was going to retire. I don’t know why he would [retire] because he just came back from a 21-month layoff. I mean he has to do what makes him happy. I don’t really know why he would retire. There is so much money on the table it would be hard to retire.”

It has been about a week since Floyd's uncle went on air over the controversial statement but the undefeated boxer has not issued any clarification whether the statement attributed to him was true or not as his uncle was not able to deny or confirm the statement.

At this point in time, it is becoming apparent that Mayweather is just looking for an alibi to justify his intention of not facing Pacquiao in November.

In his statement he said he is, "taking a year or two off from boxing." This simply means that Pacquiao won't be around anymore when he comes back from retirement for the second time.

Browsing on boxing articles found on Internet sports sites, viewers will find out what boxing fans are saying on the highly hyped Pacquiao-Mayweather fight negotiations.

Most of the comments are critical of Mayweather for not addressing the controversy created by his alleged second retirement plan.

Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter earlier said the Pacquiao-Mayweather match is the fight the world wants to see.

He said everywhere he goes around the world, he is faced with the same nagging question asking about the fight, when it's going to happen or will it happen at all?

It may be recalled that the Pacquiao-Mayweather match failed to happen last March 13 due to disagreement on blood and urine testing protocols.

Pacquiao later kept the schedule but took on Joshua Clottey at the Cowboys Stadium while Mayweather fought Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand last May 1. Both boxers won via unanimous decision.

With the prolonged fight negotiations bordering mainly on the old issue of drugs, boxing fans are becoming restless in their long wait for the fight the world wants to see.

Mayweather spearheaded the Olympic-style drug testing in the guise of cleaning up boxing sport but his crusade has been met with heavy criticism from the boxing community.

Questions about which agency should carry out his drug testing proposal have been raised. Mayweather wanted the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA) to do the testing but this was opposed by some people including members of Team Pacquiao.

They maintained that if there is any agency that qualifies to handle the proposed drug tests, it should be the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), being the sports regulating body of the state of Nevada. After all they say, the fight will be held under the jurisdiction of the state.

Be that as it may, Pacquiao has announced his agreement to the 14-day drug testing window which Mayweather's camp demanded. Originally Pacquiao proposed a 24-day testing window which the camp of Mayweather declined.

At the same time, the Filipino boxer seems to have given his consent for USADA to do the testing in order to accommodate Mayweather's demands.

Still, Mayweather continue to remain silent on the authenticity of his earlier announcement of taking one to two years hiatus which left boxing fans guessing his real intention in facing Pacquiao in the ring.

Some say he is really  scared of facing Pacquiao because of the possibility of losing his zero in his loss record and that is the real reason why he makes so many alibis just to get out of the fight.

Others say it is his way of hyping the fight to create maximum exposure for what appears to be the biggest boxing event of the decade.

In the meantime, boxing fans continue to throw trash at each other to defend their idol. Cooler heads have emerged to pacify warring fans, encouraging them to be sober and civilized with their remarks or comments but the more they offer their help to mediate the more the situation becomes inflamed.

Without any confirmation or denial from Mayweather Jr himself on his alleged "retirement" announcement, boxing fans will continue to throw trash at each other and viewers will end up as losers depending on one's concept of winning and losing.
