With Expansion Looming, The SEC Must Act Now

Alex RobertsJun 10, 2010

Here we go.

The first shot has been fired in what is sure to be an exhilarating and landscape altering battle for the remnants of the Big 12 and beyond.

Nebraska and Colorado are the first reported to move on to greener pastures, the PAC-10 and Big 10 respectively.  The rest of the Big 12 teams are sure to follow.

The SEC has been sitting high on an unquestioned college football throne for the better part of a decade.  When the idea of expansion first began rumbling around media outlets in early 2010, it was the SEC who was rumored for expansion.

Now, they are risking being left in the rear-view mirror, lost in the wake of two new Super Conferences being born, like stars out of the surrounding dust.

The time for the SEC to act is now.  They must act swiftly, and intelligently, in order to obtain teams that will be able to continue the leagues high quality product.

Rumors are abound that the Oklahoma Sooners have petitioned the SEC to allow them to enter their league.

According to KCTV in Texas, the petition has already been filed.

If this is true, and the SEC accepts, then it is a huge step in the right direction in continuing the dominance of the proud league.

Mike Slive, you need to get on the phone with Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Virginia Tech (the only teams worth a damn in the ACC).  Try to find out if you can swing Missouri.  Talk to Baylor.  Maybe even USF, as the Bulls are an up and comer in Florida.

You have to get some power players in the SEC, and you have to get them NOW.

It is a win-win for everyone involved.  For the schools, they will reap the rewards of one of the richest television contracts in college athletics history.

For the teams, they will be able to recruit knowing they are in one of the top leagues in the NCAA's, with the promise of major exposure and competition.

For the fans, the glory of being an SEC backer would continue.  It would easily be better then the new PAC-10 or Big 12, especially with the PAC-10 potentially being weaker due to USC's fall from grace.

If the SEC does not act soon, however, the options will be slim.

People may even begin talking about the SEC in football like they do the ACC in football.

Ouch.
