NCAA Presents Report To USC, Public Announcement Likely Within 24 Hours

Reid BrooksJun 9, 2010

Here is a little tidbit to break up the never-ending Pac-10 expansion coverage: USC has received the NCAA's report on the findings of its investigation.

As is required, the NCAA presents its report to investigated universities at least 24 hours in advance of making public announcements, so USC will likely be hearing something shortly.

The question still remains: what exactly will USC be facing?

Nothing has been leaked from the university as of yet, but sanctions resulting from the Pete Carroll era should be one of the many stories coming out of the college football world tomorrow. There is also the possibility that USC will not receive any sanctions at all.

The NCAA's timing seems particularly poor, as college football is distracted with Nebraska's announcement that it will be going to the Big Ten, as well as questions about the fate of the rest of the Big 12.

It had been reported that all sanctions information would be released last Friday by ESPN, but that clearly was not the case. Many speculated that the reason was the sudden expansion bomb dropped by the Pac-10.

This report has taken an abnormally long time to release and has been the subject of ample speculation. No one as of now has any idea what USC will be getting in terms of punishment, if anything, but some ideas have ranged from forfeiture of wins and Reggie Bush's Heisman to a postseason ban in coming years.

What is ironically becoming clear is that if the college football Superconference era is coming to fruition, there will likely be a major divide between the haves and have nots, and the NCAA's jurisdiction over major college football will begin slipping. This USC punishment might be the last meaningful one they have a chance to dish out.

Pete Carroll has maintained that he would be shocked by any sanctions, and USC went to drastic lenghts to turn its basketball program into a sacrificial cow for the football program.

On a day that sent Nebraska to the Big Ten, revealed Colorado scholarship forfeitures, and saw the dismissal of Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, throwing in one more headline will do little to enthrall the college football world.

Of course, tomorrow will be mild mannered, as we will likely only know what is going to happen to USC as well as what new conference Texas will be playing in.

Welcome to the offseason.
