Texas A&M To the Pac 10...Yeah I Didn't Think So Either! (Part Two)
Oh what a difference a day makes...
One of the schools that fit into the Pac 10 perfectly is now a pawn to be cast aside by Texas regents who want Baylor to replace the Buffs.
Only yesterday there were reports of a "Tech" problem (I have to choose my words wisely here, as my wife is a Tech grad), and now those whispers have to have become a scream as it has become a Tech/Baylor problem.
And that my friends makes this little game even more fun.
So where does this leave the Aggies?
Curiously, I feel less sure of a move to the SEC today.
That extra $3 Million a year from the Pac 10, and a state legislature that may insist a PRIVATE University (Baylor) be included in any move by Texas, has to chill the hearts of every Aggie longing for a yearly trip through the Magnolia lined streets of the SEC.
Aggie fans seem more likely to grab an "In-N-Out" burger in SoCal now.
On the other hand, let's assume the Aggies go east.
If that happens, who goes with?
TCU, OU, OSU, Houston...
Surely if the Aggies go east they will take a dance partner with them and the four most likely (assuming Texas goes west) are these guys.
Oklahoma and Okie State are natural rivals to Arkansas as well as quality programs. The lure of the Pac 10 may override a sensible move east for these two however, and TV markets in Oklahoma are not exactly what the SEC longs for.
However, DFW has a large alumni base of Sooners and Cowboys, so TV's in north Texas would tune in.
Houston, while having a solid history of good football is for the most part a commuter school in a market controlled by Texas A&M, so taking Houston, or "Cougar High" as most Ags refer to UH doesn't bring much if anything to the table.
TCU has the smallest alumni base of these four, but the best combination of football market and location. DFW is dominated by the Cowboys, Longhorns, and Aggies, with the Frogs a distant fifth behind Oklahoma, but this is way more about recruiting than alumni.
Allowing Texas recruits to play at home in front of family and friends every other year, or even once over a four year career is a huge selling point.
Sure playing in College Station gets SEC football into Texas, but outside of Houston athletes, it is a long drive for most.
Dallas/Ft. Worth sends a lot of kids to FBS programs every year, and this would be a coup for the conference, and would hurt Texas and Mack Brown more than anyone. A fact that every Aggie would feel terribly about... or not.
Monday
By Monday we could have the BigPac 22, and all of this would be mute, but for some reason I just dont see it panning out that way...
So until then we can conjur up visions of Verandas and Magnolias, or just an empty In-N-Out bag on the floorboard.
