Texas A&M To the Pac 10: Yeah I Didn't Think So Either (Part One)

Allen WahlstromJun 5, 2010

The first shot across the bow will likely come Monday when Boise State joins the MWC.

While that has little to do with the Aggies directly, it is the first move of what should prove to be a very interesting summer for college football fans.

The next move will likely come from the Pac 10 and the anticipated six team offer to most of the Big XII South. But is it really going to be that simple?

Lets look at the six:

  • Texas - This is a perfect fit for UT. Texas falls right in line with the majority of the Pac 10 in academics, research, money, and culture. Texas fits better with Stanford and Cal than Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
  • Colorado - Like Texas, Colorado is a very liberal university that identifies itself with the West Coast far more than the South Central based Big XII.
  • Texas Tech - Geographically this is not a bad move for Tech and going to the Pac 10 could help Tech become a Research University on par with Texas. Culturally, this is a bit of a mismatch, but I see tech going with the Longhorns
  • Texas A&M - The Pac 10 wants nothing to do with BYU, but wants the Aggies? No TAMU is not a religious institution, but it is a Military School that is 180° removed from the culture that embodies the Pac 10. The Aggies are a far better fit in the SEC on many levels, not the least of which is culture. Texas A&M-LSU every year... perfect!
  • Oklahoma - Like the Aggies and Okie State the SEC is a far better fit culturally for the Sooners. Oklahoma to the Pac 10 makes no sense other than to appease Texas.
  • Oklahoma State - The Cowboys and Razorbacks would be a much better rivalry, and like the two above, culturally the Pac 10 is Mars.

So who goes?

If reports are correct, Texas and Colorado are done deals. Those two make sense, they fit into the Pac 10 culture and Texas gets what it wanted 15 years ago.

Texas Tech and Oklahoma are possibilities, but question marks.
