College FB Chaos: Don't Blame the BCS
Oh yes, it's true. I love the BCS—and I'm not afraid to say it.
Don't blame the BCS for the chaos at the top of the polls. The system just spits out answers, after all—it doesn't make the quiz.
The BCS was designed to rank the best teams in the nation. It's done that quite successfully. The real problem is the money-hungry no-goods who've decided to play one bowl game for college football's biggest prize.
That said, even the BCS isn't going to be able to sort out what's about to happen.
Admit it—you thought it was going to be easy after last week. LSU would roll to New Orleans, where the Tigers would beat up on whoever happened to be No. 2 at the end of the regular season.
Yeah. Right.
As it stands, I'm almost positive that none of the current contenders were on anyone's national title radar in August.
Missouri? Kansas?
Two Big 12 teams that spent years flopping around the bottom of the conference barrel while Texas and Oklahoma ran rampant.
Ohio State was supposed to be in rebuilding mode after getting hammered by Florida in the 2006 championship game.
What's more, the Buckeyes' hated rivals, the Michigan Wolverines, were supposed to be the toast of the Big Ten.
West Virginia may have gotten some preseason love, but let’s face it—it was USC and LSU's world. Every other team was just living in it.
So much for that.
Whatever happens, the BCS will do the only thing it can do—spit out the rankings. And no one's going to be happy with the result.
2007 has seen it all. Appalachian State knocked a storied program to its knees. Stanford, a team that was as bad as you could get last year, took down the mighty Men of Troy.
And there's still more football to be played.
For all we know, Missouri could beat Kansas before losing the Big 12 title game, and West Virginia could fall to Connecticut.
In that scenario, you’re left with two one-loss teams—one of whom won't have the BCS juice to move into the top two—and a bunch of two-loss teams.
And Hawaii.
Why not?
Remember, this is college football's Most Insane Year Ever.
