PGA TOUR: Saturday at the HP Byron Nelson Championship

Andy ReistetterMay 22, 2010

Featured Columnist Andy Reistetter is on site at the HP Byron Nelson Championship at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas, Texas.

Saturday was moving day at the HP Byron Nelson but not everything moved or at least not much.

The lead score at the start of the day was 10-under par shared by Cameron Beckman and Blake Adams.

The lead score at the end of the day was 12-under par after a brilliant 67 by Jason Day.

Day started the day in third place one stroke behind and finished the day two strokes ahead of Blake Adams (70) and three strokes ahead of Jeff Overton (69).

Five strokes back are Mark Hensby (64), Kenny Perry (66), and Tom Pernice Jr. (66).

Sunday looks to be a lot like Saturdaymore wind and firmer conditions making scoring more difficult the later the tee time.

Hensby's 64 was matched by Arjun Atwal and both had early morning tee times (8:51 a.m. and 8:03 a.m., respectively) compared to the final group at 12:45 p.m.

Atwal is tied for seventh place, six strokes back with Heath Slocum (65, 9:27 a.m.), 16-year-old amateur Jordan Spieth (67), and Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin (69).

It's a horse race with a good chance of someone coming out of the pack firing a low score early and hoping to see it hold up as the leaders struggling to make the clubhouse.

The 2010 HP Byron Nelson has been the story of old and young.

The youngest in the field, Spieth played with the oldest Tom Pernice Jr. (50) in Round 3.

On Sunday, he will be paired with the next to oldest Corey Pavin (50), who is 41 days younger than Pernice.

Shouldn't these guys be on the Champions Tour and shouldn't Spieth be home studying for his junior year high school finals and planning to play in the next A.J.G.A. event?

What story will be written come Sunday afternoon?

Jason Day, himself a youngster at age 22 who after one year on the Nationwide Tour he finished fifth to earn his tour card.

Then he goes on to finish 83rd and 48th on the FedExCup Points List the next two years, and he wins his first PGA TOUR event at the 2010 HP Byron Nelson in only his 66th start.

Or will it be Door No. 2 where a real PGA TOUR rookie who played in his very first PGA TOUR event at the SONY Open in Hawaii earlier this year wins his first tour title in only his 14th event at the age of 34?

Or will it be Door No. 3 where we see Jeff Overton, a guy who came through all three stages of Q-School in 2005 on his very first attempt? Then the soon-to-be 27-year old retains his card for four straight seasons before winning for the first time in his 122nd start.

There are more doors of course, lots more…

The next door opens to the Paul Simon's tune and lyrics of "where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?"

Mark Hensbya name we are all familiar with but not much as recently as the 37-year-old golfer's last win came in 2004 at the John Deere Classic.

Could it be the resurgence of Kenny Perry?

So dominant in the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla in his home state of Kentucky, but somewhat softened from the heartbreaking playoff loss to Angel Cabrera in the 2009 Masters.

Perry won three times in 2008 and only once in 2009. Will this be his 15th PGA TOUR victory?

Tom Pernice Jr.?

Don't you think of him like Michael Allen where perhaps his most competitive years and wins will be on the Champions Tour where he has already won once?

A win tomorrow here would bridge the gap to his last win way back in 2001.

Arjun Atwal?

Another guy looking for his first PGA TOUR win in his 114th start after some success on the Nationwide Tour.

Heath Slocum.

The 36-year-old proved recently his could do it with his third win at the Barclays playoff event last year at Liberty National.

Tomorrow could be Slocum's day or it could be a really big day for the 16-year-old amateur Jordan Spieth.

Perhaps this young lad is a mix between Tiger Woods, who was the last amateur in high school to play in the HP Byron Nelson and Phil Mickelson, who was the last amateur to win a PGA TOUR event when he did so at the 1991 Northern Telecom Open.

If he wins here, his high school pep rally may become really raucous and they would have to cancel finals and the rest of the school year at Dallas Jesuit Prep.

Finally could the story be the current Ryder Cup Captain winning at age 50 in the same year he leads the team into competition in the foreign land of Wales this October?

So many interesting storylines are possible.

I will go with the 22-year-old kid Jason Day making tomorrow his day as he wins his first PGA TOUR event.

After all he has a two stroke lead…
