World Cup Betting – Can Spain Overcome Injuries In South Africa?
When it comes to World Cup predictions, many are picking Spain, who are the tournament co-favorites along with Brazil. The Spanish have long been one of the biggest underachievers on the global stage, with a best result of fourth place back in 1950, but after their showing at Euro 2008, they looked to be on the right path. Now, injuries are a major threat to Spain’s World Cup odds.
Fernando Torres has battled injuries all season with Liverpool, but he shut down his season at the beginning of April to have knee surgery to get fit in time for the World Cup. With David Villa and a healthy Torres would have arguably the top strike pair in South Africa, and while Villa can do a good job on his own, having Torres on the pitch creates space for him. World Cup betting players will be anxiously waiting to hear about the status of Torres as we head deeper into May and June.
As bad as that is, Spain may be hurt even more in midfield. Xavi has been playing with a torn calf muscle for the last few weeks as Barcelona is trying to hold off Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title in Spain, while his midfield mate at Barca, Andres Iniesta has been out for about a month with a torn quadriceps. To make matters worse, Cesc Fabregas had his season ended at the end of March, ironically against Barcelona in a Champions League match, when he broke his leg while tangled with Carlos Puyol, another member of the Spanish national team. Fabregas is thought to be the main understudy to Xavi and Iniesta, and he says that he is going to be healthy to go to South Africa. Iniesta looks no closer to being ready for the World Cup as he figures to be out for another few weeks, at least. Xavi’s injury is the most worrying to Spanish fans, as well as manager Vicente Del Bosque, as he is the best player of the trio with the most experience, and he has a calming presence in the Spanish midfield that allows them to play their brilliant possession football.
Soccer betting players shouldn’t jump off the Spanish bandwagon just yet as there is plenty of depth in the team, and Del Bosque has proven to be an excellent manager. Spain should still be regarded as one of the teams to beat, but you have to be worried about these injuries to important players. Not only have they been hurt, but Fabregas, Torres and Iniesta may also be going to South Africa cold as they haven’t had game action lately.
