UFC 113 Results: Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Shogun 2

Darren WongMay 8, 2010

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua finished what was started seven months ago when he knocked out Lyoto Machida in the first round.

This bout was entirely different than the first fight.

Unlike the first fight, Machida decided to fight more aggressively and also fought for takedowns. Unfortunately for Machida, Rua did a great job in getting back to his feet.

On the feet, both fighters fought more aggressively, and this time, Machida refused to back down.  Machida decided to counter Rua's leg kicks by moving in and attacking. It was an aggressive tactic, but proved to be his downfall as Rua was prepared for it.

Rua said in the post-fight press conference that he had trained for the possibility that Machida would move in to counter kicks, and was ready with punches of his own.

Rua landed a big right hand punch that hurt and dropped Machida. Rua then gained the mount position where he scored the knockout.

Congrats to Rua for becoming the UFC light-heavyweight champion and completing a remarkable comeback since his defeat to Forrest Griffin.

Next in line for the new champ appears to be the winner of the UFC 114 bout between Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans.

Josh Koscheck defeated Paul Daley by using his wrestling and ground control en route to a 30-27 decision, in a controversy-filled bout.

It quickly became clear that Daley couldn't stop Koscheck's takedowns, and he had a ton of trouble getting back up to his feet.

The first point of controversy occurred when Daley escaped a rear-naked choke attempt, but then appeared to land an illegal knee on Koscheck. The video replay shows the knee apparently missing entirely with Koscheck faking an injury.

From that point on, Koscheck lost any remaining fan support that he had in the building.

After the fight was over, Daley walked over to Koscheck and threw a sucker punch, which could easily result in a suspension. *** Update *** Dana White said in the post-fight press conference that Daley will be cut from the UFC as a result of this incident.

If there is a bright spot, it's that Koscheck is set up perfectly as the villain for his upcoming fight against Georges St. Pierre.

Jeremy Stephens and Sam Stout engaged in a fast-paced battle, but Stephens' powerful right hand proved the difference in this one, as he was able to back up Stout with it on multiple occasions. Stephens was also able to drop Stout on multiple occasions by catching Stout's kicks and countering. Stout's leg kicks were starting to take away Stephens' mobility by the third round, but it wasn't enough, as Stephens earned a split decision victory.

Kimbo Slice lost his second official UFC bout against Matt Mitrione.  Kimbo showed some explosive power with his early takedowns. Kimbo struggled with Mitrione's submissions in the first round, but managed to fend off triangle and anaconda chokes.

In the second round Kimbo was tired quickly and couldn't deal with an accumulation of leg kicks from Mitrione. Mitrione sprawled on a takedown and eventually worked his way to mount where he finished the fight by TKO as Kimbo could not intelligently defend himself.

"I felt like I softened him with those kicks and when he went for the shot I took him down," said Mitrione after the fight.

The main card started with a bout between Patrick "The Predator" Cote and Alan "The Talent" Belcher. Belcher scored early with kicks to the body, but Cote was doing far better when he got on the inside with his punches. In the second frame, Cote started to land some heavy shots on Belcher. As Cote attempted a takedown, Belcher was able to pick up Cote and slam his face into the mat. Belcher used the opportunity to take Cote's back for the submission by rear-naked choke.

The bout was called at 3:25 of the second round.

"I feel like I've won five in a row. I won that (Yoshihiro) Akiyama fight. I want the winner of Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva. I believe I'm ready for a title shot," said Belcher. At the very least, Vitor Belfort must be considered ahead of Belcher in the title hunt, and I'd add Yushin Okami to that list as well.

Preliminary Results

John Salter def. Jason MacDonald by TKO, at 2:42 of Round One.

Mike Guymon def. Yoshiyuki Yoshida by unanimous decision.

Joey Beltran def. Tim Hague by unanimous decision.

Johny Hendricks def. TJ Grant by majority decision.

Marcus Davis def. Jonathan Goulet by TKO at 1:23 of Round Two.

Joe Doerksen defeats Tom Lawlor by rear-naked choke at 2:10 of Round Two.
