Will Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley Be Another GSP vs. Dan Hardy?
Josh Koscheck is well known in the UFC for having a superior ground game. Koscheck has knockout power, although he often prefers to end his fights on the ground.
Paul Daley is an accomplished striker who has finished the majority of his wins by punches. He has racked up a lot of KOs on his record, and he looks to add another one when fighting Koscheck at UFC 113.
The obvious difference between Koscheck and Daley is the ground phase of fighting. On the ground, Koscheck is often offensive whereas Daley is purely defensive.
That's where the similarities between the Koscheck/Daley fight and the GSP/Dan Hardy fight begin.
Josh Koscheck fought and clearly lost to GSP, so by no means is this meant to be a measure of their individual fighting talent. However, when GSP fought Hardy, it was practically a grappler versus a striker, and the upcoming Koscheck/Daley bout has potential for the same outcome.
Koscheck has a strong ground game. He claims he's ready to stand with Daley, but after seeing Dustin Hazelett's recent mistake of standing with Daley, Kos would be smart not to test the waters for too long.
On the ground, Koscheck has the chance to absolutely dominate Daley just like GSP did against Hardy. And if the fight ends up here, we might get to see if Daley has Gumby arms like Hardy.
There are a few distinct similarities that Daley shares with Hardy, though. Daley is English, he fights as a welterweight, and he's primarily a striker. Even their records are similar. Hardy is 23-7-0, Daley is 23-8-2, both are 27 years old, and the majority of both their wins have ended in punches.
GSP can deliver a beating to downed opponents better than anybody currently in the UFC. In his most recent fight, GSP dismantled the striker Dan Hardy for five straight rounds, nullifying all his attempts at offense.
Just like Hardy predicted before his match against GSP, Daley plans to knock Koscheck out cold. And though many gave Hardy a brawler's chance, nobody was truly surprised at the results. Will Koscheck vs. Daley be any different?
We know that, similar to what Hardy had planned before his fight with GSP, Daley plans to stand with Koscheck and prevent any takedown attempts. And just like GSP before his bout against Hardy, Koscheck says he is well prepared and will do what it takes to get the win against Daley, and he's left it at that.
However, it should be reiterated that the case is not that Koscheck is the next GSP or even capable of what GSP can deliver. GSP's unparalleled skill is the major difference between the two bouts—that and the popular photoshop battle. Despite any difference of talent, though, the fight certainly has the chance to be as one-sided as GSP vs. Hardy.
Will Koscheck stand with the brawler, or will he actively try to take the match to the ground? Will this be the summer's most predictable match? Answers will be given this weekend.
