Why I Hope Bryan Danielson's 0-10 Streak on NXT Doesn't Last

Dale De SouzaMay 6, 2010

"Daniel Bryan is now 0-10 on NXT."

Are you kidding me?

I hope you are, WWE.

I know the guy is an ROH star—if ROH has its own Hall Of Fame, who's to say that a guy like Bryan Danielson wouldn't potentially be the first ever inductee?

That said, you give him an opportunity to prove himself in the WWE, which includes...not winning a match, getting destroyed by members of the roster—though he looked capable of holding his own against Batista and Chris Jericho, and OH, here's the genius part!

You ready?

Fans who are strictly WWE can't cheer or boo the damn guy, because 10 losses hasn't shown them that he's worth a damn for a guy who was supposedly good in other federations.

I know the guy needs to probably learn that he ain't the business in WWE like he was the business in ROH, but 10 losses and no wins?

Even Michael Tarver, the guy whose almost-certain elimination is one I won't be shocked by, won a match.

Against who?

Oh yeah, that's right—by the No. 1 guy on the pro's poll, Daniel Bryan!!

Now, I won't badmouth any of the other rookies on the show. Tarver I would actually believe has some MMA credentials that he could blend into his pro wrestling game.

Darren Young seems to me like the guy who's going to win NXT, given Bryan's treatment by WWE officials. Besides, the kid's talented.

Skip Sheffield...well, he's an Aggie (my sister is Texas A&M alumna, Class of '04, so I gotta give the Aggies a give of a ribbing).

The guy looks like he could become either tweener or face, if WWE keeps him after NXT is done with. Also, he's another talented individual who, by the way, has the look of a guy that Vince could push to the title, in my opinion.

Wade Barrett, I refuse to cover in this article.

I will emphasize the need of you, the reader, to check this dude's in-ring skills out. He's like a young William Regal under the tutelage of Chris Jericho. He's that good, from what I can see.

Justin Gabriel is one example of why high-flyers need to get pushed in WWE...that, plus he's South African—my mother was born in Pietermaritsburg, so I'm biased a bit towards most athletes that call "Suid Afrika" home.

David Otunga. I gotta admit he is a guy I thought was one of those guys with the "Hollywood arrogant" character, mixed in with the physique of Randy Savage, nearly the voice-pitch of Bobby Lashley, the smooth arrogance of Rick Martel, and despite the arrogance, the ability to make the fans love him as if his name was Jeff Hardy.

That's what I thought, considering the pops he got when he came out to Ron Killings' WWE music.

He's supposed to be heel, I know, but Otunga has something about him that makes you wonder if his in-ring personality is going to one day be right up there with Dwayne Johnson's attitude as "The Rock."

By the way, Mr. Johnson, if you happen upon this, you're still Rocky Maivia to me, damn it!

Sigh.

Anyway...

There's also the "one man rock band" Heath Slater. I must say this about him: If WWE really wants to bury Danielson and call it "humbling," at least push Heath Slater for crying out loud.

Didn't he beat Chris Jericho back before Jericho lost the World Title to Jack Swagger?

The main reason why I'm speaking highly of the other rookies is because, to me, WWE is not showing the strictly-WWE fans what Daniel Bryan can really do in the ring. I thought the loss to Jericho would have been some sort of angle.

The thinking on my part was that Bryan was going to come close but fall short against Jericho, Miz was always going to put Bryan down, and Bryan would at least win a few matches, losing a few in between but enough so that hardcore WWE fans would think that Daniel Bryan was a talented kid.

What WWE has been doing with Daniel Bryan is a perfect example of why I don't think too many things through.

They say they're humbling the former ROH star, but I say they're giving us, the fans, and also a lot of the insiders, an etched-in-concrete-and-fully-dried reason why we shouldn't care about Daniel Bryan at all.

Shelton Benjamin beats Triple H his first night on Raw, John Cena (pardon my language) comes as close to beating Kurt Angle as any up-and-comer has gotten before tapping out, Orlando Jordan even gets respect from The Undertaker before he grows an afro and turns heel...

And yet, Bryan Danielson isn't allowed to show what he can do against a bunch of guys who come from FCW.

If you can explain to me why this "0-10" streak—this career burial of Danielson—is the best possible reason for me to watch even 15 more minutes of any professional wrestling program without dissing pro wrestling, I'll do it.

I'll watch next week's WWE and TNA programming and not complain once that it is in any way lackluster.

I'm sorry to say though, if there is a reason why this is the best thing ever for this post-Attitude era of WWE, I'm not seeing it...

And frankly, I don't want to, unless it ends after the elimination episode of NXT.
