Angel Di Maria To Real Madrid

Ehab El JundiMay 6, 2010

Rumor has it that Angel Di Maria has signed for Real Madrid, and will join them next year. Considering the talent the Argentine winger is blessed with, this is not a bad bet on the royal club's part. However, it merits a deeper look at how both sides see this transfer.

From Real Madrid's point of view, this signing makes sense as it adds one more talented player to their pool. It means, on paper, that Madrid are getting more competitive, and a bit more star-studded than they are during this campaign. And so, you would think it makes perfect sense.

Now, how should Di Maria see his new job?

Years have proven, mainly since the first Galacticos era, that Madrid signs names for the sake of names. They have failed on several occasions to utilize the pool of talents they had on hand, and slowly burned out a couple of hot prospects.

They stack them on the bench until they lose confidence, and then they ship them out during the first transfer window that comes their way. Sneijder, Robben, Saviola, Huntelaar amongst others. Benzema is going through the burning out phase, and everything is going as per plan.

Di Maria should know, that as a an attacking Midfielder or as a forward, usually playing on the left, he is being pitted against Cristiano Ronaldo. By now, we all know that CR9 has returned the investment the club made when they signed him through his shirts' sales, not titles.

Therefore, if Di Maria is under any illusion that he will win a place in the starting XI, he should wake up and smell the coffee. Whoever the new coach of Madrid might be, sorry Pellegrini, he will not sacrifice CR9 for Di Maria.

This means that the inevitable will happen. Di Maria will warm the bench, or in the best case scenario, will be deployed somewhere else on the pitch to accommodate the other stars. And considering you have Kaka, Benzema and Higuain, it still doesn't look very bright for him.

In light of the above, for the sake of his career, which is still on the rise, he should not sign for Madrid. At least not for the time being. Once he has proven himself in one of the big leagues in Europe, a move to Madrid would make more sense.

Argentina has a great pool of talent, especially in the final third of the pitch. Messi, Higuain, Milito, Tevez and Aguero are all performing at the highest level. In order to add Di Maria to the list above, he should not move to Madrid this summer. Maradona may need to have a word with him. Oh I forgot, Maradona needs someone to talk to him before he starts talking to people.
