In their first domestic match since July 2009, the United States showcased a strong team, made up almost entirely of WPS players.
Amid beautiful 79-degree weather at Torero Stadium in San Diego, Calif., the US scored early with a goal by Philadelphia Independence forward Amy Rodriguez and built on the lead for the remainder of the match.
Boxx's goal came in the 43rd minute of the match to make the game 2-0 going into halftime. Washington Freedom defender Catherine Whitehill blasted a 60-yard free kick towards goal and in the flurry of players, Mexican goalkeeper Tajonar got a poor touch on the ball. It fell to Boxx, who calmly tapped the ball into the net.
The United States didn't score again until the 73rd minute, when Boxx headed back a poorly executed Mexico free kick towards goal. Lauren Cheney collected the ball, nipped around her defender, and finished with the outside of her foot to raise the tally to 3-0.
With the win, goalkeeper Hope Solo raised her all-time record to 69-5-9.
The US plays Mexico again on Wednesday, March 31, this time in Sandy, Utah. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. Mountain Time and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
