Ultimate Fighting? Or Ultimate Grappling? Why GSP Is Not The P4P Best.

Justin DowlingMar 28, 2010

With UFC 111 taking place last night in Newark, New Jersey in front of a capacity crowd there were not many surprises but was overall a good card excluding the main event between Champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre and number one contender Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy.

Coming in to this fight we all knew what the game-plans were Hardy was ready to stand-up and St. Pierre was going to test the grappling ability of the Britt which was previously untested. Although leading up to this fight we kept hearing from St. Pierre and his camp that this was the biggest, strongest, and most complete Georges St. Pierre that has ever fought and he was ready to make a statement with a convincing and decisive win over Dan Hardy.

With his five round decision victory he most definitely got the decisive win he talked about, grinding out his opponent for five rounds using his world class wrestling ability. Dspite his dominance, it wasn't in the way that Georges St. Pierre or the fans thought or wanted it to happen.

Even in the post fight interview by Joe Rogan he adamantly apologized to his fans because he knew it wasn't exciting and he knew that he didn't satisfy any critics while giving more of the same with his performance.

Georges St. Pierre might be the pound for pound best "grappler" and most athletic fighter in the world but he is by far not the pound for pound best "fighter" in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one to bash his style of fighting or one to call that fight boring.  That's just not me. I respect Georges St. Pierre for his world class wrestling ability and the fact that hes the best Welterweight the UFC has ever seen and might ever see, but he is simply not the pound for pound best fighter in the world.

He's up there and i'd probably give him the number three spot on the list but as far as pound for pound rankings go he has to be behind Anderson "The Spider" Silva & BJ "The Prodigy" Penn.

These two fighters have to be given more consideration than St. Pierre for the simple fact that they show superiority over there opponents not only on the ground, but in the stand-up as well.

If BJ Penn is fighting an opponent with good stand-up he doesn't lay on the guy for five rounds or take the guy down with every chance he gets to use his far superior ju-jitsu, he exercises skills in both fields and it doesn't matter where the fight goes whether its on the feet or the ground he is confident in his ability to take out his opponent and this is not the case with GSP.

Anderson Silva may have the best Muay-Thai in the world but he still has a black belt in BJJ and has shown he can dispatch his opponents however he chooses. Silva and Penn are one weight class above and one weight class below St. Pierre and these fighters never show fear to there opponent with there fighting style, the fight goes where it goes and they still dominate the opposition. Three of St. Pierre's last five fights have gone to a decision.

He's shown his far superior grappling and wrestling ability without showing how complete he is in the Octagon or showing that he doesn't care where the fight goes. He's been weary to stand up since the Serra KO loss and this is why to me St. Pierre cannot be considered the best pound for pound fighter in the world.
