Inter Milan Fall at Olympico, as AS Roma Marches on with a 2—1 Victory

Jesse SarwarMar 28, 2010

AS Roma blew open the title race, as Serie A leaders, Inter Milan, were struck down by a Luca Toni winner, falling 2—1 to AS Roma.

The Giallarossi opened the scoring early in the first half through stand—in skipper, Danielle De Rossi, but the lead was cancelled out by a Diego Milito equaliser mid—way through the second half.

Unfortunately for the Inter Milan faithful, Luca Toni hit the winner with a little less that 20 minutes remaining.

Inter arrived at the Stadio Olympico knowing that a win would all but seal a fifth consecutive League title, but their league form of late has been indifferent.

In contrast, the hosts were in rude health having come off the back of a 20—match unbeaten run in the league.

And it was Claudio Ranieri's men who started the brighter by putting the Inter back four under immediate pressure.

This pressure eventually go to Intern after just 18 minutes with Inter shot—stopper, Julio Ceasar, fumbling a weak header from Cassetti. De Rossi was first to pounce on the loose ball to put the Romans ahead.

An expected Inter fight back materialised after the break and it was Milito who netted the equaliser, despite Roma protests for offside.

Television replays showed at least two Inter players offside. But their joy was short lived.

A woeful attempt at goal from second half substitute, Rodrigo Taddei, was superbly controlled by Luca Toni inside the box and in a flash, turned and fired in what proved to be the winner.

The on—loan striker has now struck four times in eight games and none more so important than the one that reignites the race for the Scuddetto.

Inter boss, Jose Mourinho, spent much of the last 20 minutes of the game, laughing sarcastically at every decision that went against his team.

Seven Inter players were booked and Christian Chivu was the luckiest man in Rome, as he escaped a red card after stamping Luco Toni on the thigh.

Ranieri played down Roma's Scudetto chances, insisting that Inter were still clear favourites.

And they surely are.

But momentum is with the Romans and with Inter's sights on Champions League glory, this may well be Roma's title.
