DeAngelo Williams Likes A RBBC? | Why Greed is Good

Sean E. DouglasMar 20, 2010

When you grow up and play sports you're usually taught the values of being an unselfish player and doing what's best for your fellow teammates. Sure, everyone wants to play and have success, but sometimes your coach would tell you to lay down a bunt in little league, or perform some unselfish act in the sport you played.

At the pro level, we tend to applaud players that take one for the team, or don't worry about their stats for the greater good of success.

While all that is good in real sports, it a horrible sight for me to see a player play in such a way when they are on my fantasy football team. What I'm really trying to say is, greed is good in fantasy football, and the more selfish my players are the better my team does.

I can hear those haters out there saying, "that is exactly why I can't stand you darn fantasy guys." If you're one of those people, please don't bother to comment on this article, because I really don't give a rip about your opinion.

In this world, a player like Terrell Owens is king (until the he gets kicked off the team), because if he's not getting the football, he will let everyone and their mama know about it. So what if you have to knock a few heads in, like Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers ? If that's what it takes to have a successful season than by golly do it.

This is why it pains me to hear the news that running back DeAngelo Williams actually likes to be in a RBBC with Jonathan Stewart .

Heck, Williams didn't just say he likes being in a committee, he actually thanked Panthers upper management for prolonging his career by drafting Stewart. With Stewart on the team Williams feels good because he doesn't have to carry the load over 300 times a season and take more punishment.

These words stand in the face of everything a fantasy owner wants, as you could care less about a player's longevity if it means they will produce 2,000 total yards instead of 1,500 in a season.

I remember having Eddie George in 2000 when Coach Jeff Fisher made him carry the football 403 times (he also had 50 receptions), and do you think I felt sorry about George's workload? Heck no, he had a great year for my team, and I could give a rip if the guy broke down a few years later.

In this game, you take it while you've got it, and to me that was a thing of beauty to see Fisher run his star into the ground.

It's Just A Game

With all that said, fantasy football is just a game, and of course I'm joking when I say it's a good thing to run players into the ground and to be selfish. While there is some sick truth to those acts helping your fantasy football team, they aren't necessarily the best for a fans enjoyment of the game.

I guess it's perfectly fine for a guy like Williams to prolong his career and sip a cup of coffee on the side lines while J-Stew is scoring his touchdowns. From an NFL stand point, his unselfishness will probably make the Panthers a better team.

But from a fantasy perspective, Williams comments make me sick, and his fantasy value will continue to be hurt because he's in a committee. Here's to being unselfish.
