Barcelona Too Strong for Arsenal? Think Again

Kush SharmaMar 19, 2010

So the two best footballing sides in the world will lock horns once again.

This time, for a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

While the Salivary glands of most footballing fans would already be at work, Arsenal supporters might find theirs relatively drier, and rightly so.

No one in their right mind would have wanted to draw the mighty Catalans.

But the question is, would they have wanted to draw Arsenal? No again.

There is a reason behind all the excitement and adventurous commotion induced by this draw.

And that is that Arsenal are not too behind Barcelona and on their day, possess the capability to overcome them.

Now apart from the usual "Arsenal play like Barca and both being in top form" buzz, which is bound to grip the papers, one constituent of this draw can actually aid the Gunners.

And that is that they play the first game at home.

In normal circumstances, this would be considered as a disadvantage but in my opinion , against a team like Barcelona, this can work in favour of the team that doesn't travel in the first leg.

If Arsenal were to go to Camp Nou first, any sort of victory for Barcelona, let alone a very feasible 2-3 goal margin one, would have left the Gunners with a next-to-impossible task on their own turf, with a danger of an away goal looming too.

Arsenal are more than capable of a victory at The Emirates, especially when there is no pressure and the tie is fresh.

Even a good old "one nil to the Arsenal" would give the Gunners a huge boost going in to the second leg.

And given that Barcelona aren't the type to park a bus in front of the goal, even conceding one at home won't be the end of the world, for Arsenal will never be too far from a scoring one themselves in the second leg, more so when the pressure of conceding an away goal would be on Pep Guardiola's men.

And with Barcelona being the favourites anyway, Arsenal would be under less strain right from the word go.

In the 2006 Champions League Final showdown between the two, the team from North London was, even with 10 men, the better side for three quarters of the game, but ended up losing.

They say vengeance has no foresight...like Arsenal care!
