2010 NFL Draft: Official Mock Draft - First Round
First Round
1. St. Louis Rams – DT Ndamukong Suh – Nebraska
Now, the Rams have said they are going to let Sam Bradford earn the top pick. However, Steve Spagnuolo is a defensive-minded coach, and Suh is a once-in-a-generation defensive tackle who can usually blow offensive lineman way off the line of scrimmage, and I think that’ll be too hard for him to pass up.
2. Detroit Lions – OT Russell Okung – Oklahoma StateHear me out on this pick. Russ Okung is a great offensive lineman, and though the Lions could pick Gerald McCoy in this situation, their offense is starting to shape up nicely besides their offensive line, so I think they might consider drafting an offensive tackle.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DT Gerald McCoy – OklahomaIf this scenario played out, this pick would happen in about two seconds. DT is one of their biggest needs and McCoy is a beast. The Bucs would be happy to get a kid like this to help their rebuilding.
4. Washington Redskins – QB Sam Bradford – OklahomaHey, they third pick involving Oklahoma in a row.
But on a serious note, with Shanahan coming in he’s going to want his guy at QB, and though he might prefer Clausen in this situation, or he might trade for Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb, I believe that picking Bradford (or Clausen) will happen unless he gets his QB, or if Okung is still on the board.
5. Kansas City Chiefs – S Eric Berry – TennesseeThis one could very well happen.
Berry is an athletic monster, as shown at his combine. He’s considered one of the top safeties to come out into the draft in a while, and the Chiefs are starting to build around their defense, so Berry could be a very enticing pick.
6. Seattle Seahawks – OT Bryan Bulaga – IowaThe Seahawks need help on their O-line quickly. I don’t think anyone’s going to pick Spiller between now and their second pick, unless San Fran wants to pick him up. Pete Carroll may want to make a splash with his first pick, but Hasselbeck is still a serviceable QB, they need to build up in the trenches first.
7. Cleveland Browns – WR Dez Bryant – Oklahoma StateOriginally this pick would’ve been Joe Haden, but he didn’t have a very good combine (although I think he’ll be a successful NFL player). They picked two wideouts last year, but they don’t really have anyone too good on the roster at wideout, although Massaquoi is developing nicely, a second wideout to play next to him would be good.
8. Oakland Raiders – OT Bruce Campbell – MarylandAt this point, most people do believe that this “workout warrior” will get picked up by the Raiders. They need help on the O-line, everyone including Big Al knows that, so they will scoop him up while they can.
9. Buffalo Bills – QB Jimmy Clausen – Notre DameThe Bills are left with a new coach. Although this new coach likes mobile quarterbacks very much, Gailey will probably want his QB, like Shanahan, so I see them picking up Clausen.
They have a ton of holes to fill, still.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars – DE Derrick Morgan – Georgia Tech
Although many think that the Jaguars should draft Tim Tebow, it’s way too early for that and no one’s going to draft him by their next pick. They may have drafted ends a lot lately, but those ends aren’t working out too well so I think Morgan or Pierre-Paul is their guy.
11. Denver Broncos (from Bears) – CB Joe Haden – Florida
Champ Bailey isn’t getting any younger. He may have been voted to the Pro Bowl but he’s just not on that level anymore. Haden would be a great corner to play opposite Bailey for now and then to take over his role one day.
And Dez Bryant is off the board.
12. Miami Dolphins – DT Dan Williams – Tennessee
The Dolphins are starting to build their defense. Williams would be a very good DT for them, and with Jason Ferguson being suspended eight games, they need a fill-in for him anyway, so why not make it their first-round pick?
13. San Francisco 49ers – RB CJ Spiller – Clemson
The dilemma is: let a back like Spiller go to the Seahawks, or get your offensive tackle before your next pick. I think they would pick Spiller so he wouldn’t go to a rival, plus they would get a great back to complement Frank Gore.
And if Anthony Davis can last to their next pick then they had a great first round.
14. Seattle Seahawks (from Broncos) – DE Jason Pierre-Paul – South Florida
The Seahawks picked their lineman before, so now they turn to the defense. They need some fixing, and it’s always good to start in the trenches. Though this guy is a one-year wonder, he is a workout beast.
But they said the same thing about Vernon Gholston, too.
15. New York Giants – ILB Rolando McClain – Alabama
By the way, McClain has Crohn’s disease, which might alarm a few teams. That’s the only reason he would drop this far.
The Giants had an awful defense last year, so they’ll need to draft someone on the defensive side. They cut Antonio Pierce, so drafting a guy with the skills of McClain makes sense.
I love Brandon Graham as a player, and he has the potential to do great things in the league. The Titans have a huge need at DE, and Graham can convert to DE or just rush the QB for them.
To me, it was between him and Carlos Dunlap, but the character issues of Dunlap broke the tie.
17. San Francisco 49ers – OT Anthony Davis – Rutgers
How Davis dropped this far, I have no clue. But 49ers fans would be very happy if the draft played out this way. Davis is a pretty good tackle and the 49ers need a lot of help on their line to fix up their holes and to start competing for the division.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers – C Maurkice Pouncey – Florida
The Steelers are pretty much guaranteed to be drafting O-line. This pick is a bit of a stretch, but Pouncey is a very good player and he can probably convert to guard, too.
I’ve always been pretty high on this guy at center, though.
19. Atlanta Falcons – DE Everson Griffin – USC
I don’t think the Falcons want someone lazy who got arrested, so Dunlap doesn’t fit. They really need a pass-rusher and Griffin is someone who worked out better than expected, and could turn out to be this draft’s best defensive player, following the mold of the USC player from a year ago (Brian Cushing anyone?).
20. Houston Texans – CB Kyle Wilson – Boise State
Before he was a workout warrior or all of that, I actually thought that Wilson would be great in the NFL. Now all the teams know him after his workout and great Senior Bowl performance. Wilson fits the Texans’ need at CB perfectly.
21. Cincinnati Bengals – TE Jermaine Gresham – Oklahoma
I think the Bengals are tired of JP Foschi at TE. They filled their receiver need pretty well with Antonio Bryant, so a TE of the level of Gresham gives them a nice receiving core for Carson Palmer.
22. New England Patriots – OLB Sergio Kindle – Texas
The Patriots need a pass rusher, and they need one badly. I could see them trading up to try to get Brandon Graham, but I’m sure they’ll be very happy with Sergio Kindle. He is a nice pass rusher who can get to the QB well.
23. Green Bay Packers – G Mike Iupati – Idaho
The Packers need help on the line. Aaron Rodgers got destroyed until that line got their act together at the end of the year. However, they need help at the position and Iupati is the best lineman left on the board.
24. Philadelphia Eagles – DE Carlos Dunlap – Florida
The Eagles need a pass rusher. Even with Earl Thomas still left on the board Dunlap is a very good pass rusher and one of the Eagles’ biggest holes is in the rush. Don’t be surprised if Dunlap goes over Thomas.
25. Baltimore Ravens – WR Arrelious Benn – Illinois
The Ravens may have traded for Boldin, but they have a big need at wideout still. They would draft Gresham if he was on the board, I would think. But Benn was rated very highly before the season and he dropped on draft boards so the Ravens would be happy with this pick.
26. Arizona Cardinals – LB Sean Witherspoon – Missouri
Karlos Dansby and Darnell Dockett left them.
I would assume a team that needs a safety would trade up into this spot if the draft played out this way such as the Jets because the Cowboys would take him at the next pick. But if no one traded up, Witherspoon would be a nice pick for the Cardinals.
27. Dallas Cowboys – S Earl Thomas – Texas
Honestly, the Cowboys’ safeties aren’t that great. They also need some help at tackle. But Earl Thomas could go in the top 15 picks, so with him all the way at 27 the Cowboys might draft him, since he is a need and probably best player left on the board.
28. San Diego Chargers – DT Jared Odrick – Penn State
The Chargers are looking for a vet back, and although they might want Ryan Mathews they have a huge hole at defensive tackle, and Odrick is a pretty good one at the position, so it would be a good fit.
29. New York Jets – RB Ryan Mathews – Fresno State
The Jets may be left with one running back if Leon Washington leaves. Although the Jets have said they like Chauncey Washington from their practice squad, Shonn Greene is very injury-prone and they would draft a RB who could take his place, and Mathews is a very capable player of doing that.
30.Minnesota Vikings – CB Devin McCourty – Rutgers
The Vikings will be doing some cornerback drafting, and McCourty is a very good player. He has been shooting up draft boards ever since his workouts, and I believe he is the third best corner on the board next to Wilson and Haden of course.
And the Vikings really need a corner.
31. Indianapolis Colts – DT Brian Price – USC
The Colts usually draft for value, and boy is Brian Price some value. Trent Williams would be another possible pick, but they don’t need too much help on the line. Price is a force on the line that isn’t talked about much, but he is a very good player that can help Indy out.
32.New Orleans Saints – DT Terrence Cody – Alabama
Even with his weight issues, Cody is a very good player and the Saints could use some help rushing the passer. To defend their trophy, they are going to have to rush the passer quickly especially if Sharper doesn’t resign. If he doesn’t I could see Nate Allen being drafted here.
Well that concludes GNB Sports’ first round mock draft. Tune in next time when we do round 2.
