The Title Race Hots Up, Liverpool and Their Woes

Kirk HendersonMar 12, 2010

The Title Race Hots Up
The once proclaimed 'Two Horse Race' has truly turned into a 'Three Horse Race' again, Arsenal v Man Utd v Chelsea. At this moment it would be difficult to predict who exactly will lift the coveted Premier League title, im going to quickly right a short review of the three sides in the race.
 >Arsenal
Arsenal where written out of the title race, not once but twice this season following defeats to Man Utd and Chelsea, but they have bounced back once again, winning four games on the bounce and being within touching distance of both united and chelsea. Arsenal however are missing key players currently, with the likes of talismanic captain cesc fabregas, robin van persie, william gallas, johan djorou, kieran gibbs et al. But their performance on tuesday proves Arsenal are not a team that solely relies on Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie for creativity and that could be key to Arsenal in this title race. It looks as though the tragic incident involving Aaron Ramsey has revitalised Arsenal's title bid. Key player for Arsenal: You would probably have to say Cesc Fabregas on current form, his assists and goals are unmatched in the Arsenal squad and his form could be key to how Arsenal perform on both fronts (Champions League and Premiership)
>Man Utd
Man Utd have had an interesting season to say the least, they have massive highs and astounding lows, but coming up to 30 games and there they are, as consistent as ever, which some may say is solely down to Wayne Rooney. United aim to make it 4 Premiership titles in a row which has never been achieved in english football, but if one manager could do that you would have to say it would be alex ferguson. A problem Man Utd might have with trying to win the premiership is their defence, for most the season they have missed the Ferdinand - Vidic partnership, they have both been out at the same time, and they have had to put the likes of Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in defence. If their defence stays fit i don't see why they can't win the premiership. Key Player for Man Utd: Of course this accolade would have to go to Wayne Rooney, he is on fire at the moment, hardly a chance goes by without him burying it in the net, if he stays fit, Man Utd may well lift the Premier League title.
>Chelsea
The fans, pundits and bookies favourite this season, similarly to last season Chelsea were tipped to run away with the League title, but of course it is never that simple is it. Chelsea have a game in hand and a vastly experience team, compared to that of Arsenal, but they have had some very queer results this season that makes you believe they aren't dead certs to win the title this season. A problem for Chelsea is that the way they play under Ancelotti, they play a very narrow game which means that they can be exposed quite easily down the wings, and it is quite evident that they miss Michael Essien and Petr Cech, the sooner they both get fit the better for Chelsea. Key Player for Chelsea: Didier Drogba, he is determined to fire Chelsea to the title, he along with Rooney, Fabregas and Messi have been the best players in the world this season, without him Chelsea don't look the same menacing prospect, in order for Chelsea to win the illusive 'Treble' they are going to need a fit Drogba.

Liverpool and their woes
Well where do I start, Liverpool have had a torrid season, pre-season it was full of so much hope, their was talk of titles and champions league. But things have gone terribly wrong for them from the first kick of the ball this season, they have lost at places they shouldn't in a million of years lost at, got knocked out of the champions league. Lately though certain things haven't been going as badly for Liverpool, they were winning games again and moving closer to 4th place, but then out of knowhere they lost to Wigan, which personally had me shocked and to make things worse the lose to Lille in the Europa League. Liverpool have a heap of problems that don't look like they will be solved anytime soon, but at least the calls for Rafa's head have quelled for a while. What Liverpool need to do is go right back to the basics, they now have Torres back that's a bonus, they need him to start scoring and for Gerrard to act like his is remotely interested in lifting Liverpool from their obscurity. Last season I marvelled at Liverpool for the way they hunted Man Utd down for the Title, they played gung-ho direct football and nearly lifted the title. If they want to finish four they are going to need to recapture that kind of mindset.

Champions League Round Up
Real Madrid are out! and i'm not remotely surprised, 6th straight season and frankly I saw that coming, Real Madrid do not play as a team, they play like a bunch of strangers thrust together and forced to play football against their will. Pellegrini no doubt will not be their next season even if they win La Liga, Schuster and Capello prove that you need more than just that to survive in the job. Lyon, though must be given some plaudits, they remained organised despite being destroyed in the first half and now they have a Champion's League Quarter-Final to look forward to. Man Utd demolish AC Milan and in my mind that was always on the cards, Serie A just isn't what it used to be, not at one point did I believe AC Milan where going to beat Man Utd especially with Rooney in the team. Arsenal thrash Porto 5-0 and prove all the people wrong who said they couldn't win without Cesc Fabregas and Nicklas Bendtner gives every newspaper and pundit a slap in the chops with a hat-trick.
