Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey: Why Manny Pacquiao Must Lose This Fight

Tyler CurtisMar 11, 2010

This is the fourth installment in my five part series about the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight. Some may look at this title and think “Why do you want boxing’s biggest attraction to lose?” Well I am going to tell you why.

Manny Pacquiao must lose this fight against Joshua Clottey. He has talked of retirement in the near future and is taking another stab at the political scene in his native Philippines.

If we wins this fight he may just pack his bags and go home. If we wins both this fight and the election for the congressional seat for the Sarangani province then it will be an almost sure ticket home for Pacquiao.

He is the first fighter to win seven world championships in seven different divisions and has beaten legend after legend. In his mind he may have nothing left to prove and to be honest I wouldn’t argue with that point.

He says he really wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., but after he was disrespected by him he may decide Mayweather doesn’t deserve a fight. Again that is something I could agree with.

If Pacquiao retires it would be as the pound for pound No. 1 with an 11 fight win streak, spanning five years. Most importantly he would go out loved by millions of people and a national icon in the Philippines.

He would be recognized as the top fighter or at least as one of the top two fighters of his generation. People would remembered him as the guy who started fighting at 106 pounds and ended his career beating top 145 pounders.

He has quality wins over Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera, an unbeaten Jorge Solis, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto. He ended the career of the great De La Hoya, and was the only man to knock out Barrera.

He has at least three or four years of good fights left in him and there are exciting up-and-comers who would love a shot at the prestigeous boxer.

Who doesn’t want to see him fight Edwin Valero at some point? That would be a great fight.

We should relax before we all panic that we may be losing one of the best ever.

In his last political foray he was smashed and does anyone really think that Joshua Clottey is the man to unseat this modern great?

I don’t think so, but maybe his hatred of Mayweather and his inability to win the seat in the Philippines will keep him in the ring for another couple of years.

If we know anything it is that the Pacman loves his fans and if it comes down to it he wont want to disappoint them. If he does lose though we know he will be back for more. So maybe, just maybe, a Pacquiao loss would be better for boxing than a Pacquiao win.
