Mayweather Is Currently Smashing Pacquiao
This weekend is the return to the ring of boxing’s number one pound for pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, defending his WBO welterweight title against the strong and durable Joshua Clottey at the world’s biggest and most expensive stadium, the new billion dollar Dallas Cowboys stadium.
So one would be thinking that if it's Pac Man fight time the boxing world would be buzzing with Pac Man Fever right about now right? Wrong. It seems that for one reason or another this Saturday’s Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight does not have the same hype or buzz that Pacquiao’s recent "super mega" fights all had (fights agaist Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, and Oscar De La Hoya).
So why is it that Pacquiao vs. Clottey does not have that same mass appeal that his last three huge fights all had?
Top Rank is doing a poor job on promoting this fight. Yes Top Rank Godfather Bob Arum is now pushing 80 years old and he was a legendary promoter, quite arguably the greatest boxing promoter of all time. But his situation is just like that of Marlon Brando, who many consider to be the greatest actor of all time, but became extremely lazy in his last final performances and a whole new younger generation ended up viewing him as nothing but a fat lazy horrible actor.
It has been reported that Godfather Arum was provided with a handsome eight figure check just for agreeing to have Pacquiao fight at the new Cowboy Stadium, and to be honest if I was pushing 80 years old myself, I would probably just take the eight figure check and go relax some where warm and quiet instead of trying to hype a fight I was already paid for in advance.
On top of that there was no ritual HBO, 24/7 promotion this time to hype all the casual fans up and pretend that Manny’s opponents actually have a strong legitimate chance of winning.
Most casual fans do not know who the hell Joshua Clottey is. Clottey is one of those good solid welterweights who is a former champion yet he has never gotten his due, for he would always fall short in his biggest fights with Miguel Cotto and (a possibly Plaster of Paris version of) Antonio Margarito. More people know who Jerry Jones is than Clottey, so Pacquiao would probably be better off fighting Jerry Jones on that insane "largest HD screen in the world" that hangs in the center of the stadium. That ridiculous mother of all HD screens is far more famous than Clottey as well.
In all honesty, outside the state of Texas and except for the hardcore Pacquiao and hardcore boxing fans, the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight is not really being talked about because the general public is not even aware that these two are fighting this Saturday.
So which fight is it that the general population is buzzing about right about now? Mayweather vs. Mosley.
Golden Boy Promotions, unlike Top Rank, has done an excellent job in promoting the super welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley. Golden Boy Promotions did a multi-city press conference tour to hype the fight up, much like how an in-there-prime, turn of the millenium Backstreet Boys would fly across the world to do a world tour press conference to promote their new album dropping, and we the fans want it that way .
From the first New York conference where Mayweather dissed and trash talked Mosley for everything from Mosley not owning the promotions company that he works for to his suit not being custom tailored, and even Mayweather even threw in some below the belt trash talking about his ex-wife and alimony payments.
Oh yeah and of course there was the poorly choreographed WWE-staged shoving match and an overly excited Leonard Ellerbe running to get Floyd’s back in the rumble—only to slip and break his ass bone (Let’s all hope Ellerbe’s ass bone is fine).
You then had the second stop at Washington D.C. where Floyd amazed the media with his legendary pad work routines. Anyone who has ever laced them up or trained knows how talented this man truly is when we see him work the mitts like no other.
Then you had the final Los Angeles press conference where both fighters made grand "rock star" entrances, 1980’s Bon Jovi style, with cheesy smoke machines and all. Thousands of fans flocked to see both Mayweather and Mosley on stage and they were given hand held fans with Mayweather’s face on one side and Mosley’s face on the other to signify which fighter they felt was going to win the fight. It was a very clever, almost genius idea to give the people of Los Angeles these promotional tools to hype the fight in a "ghetto fabulous" election style.
All of these events that I just mentioned flooded the boxing forums and blogs and got everyone talking about the Mayweather vs. Mosley fight as if the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight were not even happening first.
Mayweather and Mosley are big names in the sport of boxing. Plus you add the fact that both Mayweather and Mosley are American and statistically American fighters tend to do better pay per view wise here in America. These are all reasons why there is a strong indication that Mayweather is going to smash Pacquiao...at least in PPV sales.
So it comes down to this ladies and gentlemen. If you, like many of us, all want to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao happen you need to buy the Pacquiao vs. Clottey PPV this Saturday. Do not illegally stream this fight and don't just wait for the results via live blogs or chats. We all need to purchase this fight: Pacquiao vs. Clottey PPV.
Whether you are a true Pacquiao fan and want to see Pacquiao knock out Mayweather, or you are a Mayweather fan and want him to school and out-box Pacquiao, you must buy the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight in order for that fight to happen.
Mayweather has stated that if he outsells Pacquiao in their up coming PPV sales then he will demand a 65% to 35% split of his fight purse with Pacquiao, which basically means the fight is once again off.
The true fight fans can make a difference if we come together in solidarity and order the Pacquiao vs Clottey fight this Saturday March 13th on HBO PPV.
