Is Pierre McGuire Overstaying His Welcome In The Broadcast Booth?

Ben CousinsMar 8, 2010

Pierre McGuire is undoubtedly the busiest man in hockey.

He is signed on to do NHL color commentary for both NBC and CTV/TSN, doing approximately 3 games a week.

When he is not in the broadcast booth, he writing a weekly piece for Sports Illustrated and being an analyst for the TSN hockey studio, where he does work for things like: the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, the Trade Deadline, the Entry Draft and of course, The Olympics. Not to mention daily radio interviews for numerous radio stations across the nation.

During the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, McGuire was the busiest man of the games, doing close to 30 games during the 17 day span for both CTV and NBC.

The Montreal-native got his break in the National Hockey League industry in 1990 when he became a scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning two Stanley Cups with the organization. He eventually went to the Ottawa Senators in 1994 as a scout and assistant coach after a brief stint with the Hartford Whalers.

McGuire broke out into television in 1997 when he did color commentary for the Montreal Canadiens. He eventually got a permanent job with TSN and his career has taken off since then.

The 3 time Gemini-award winner, seems to be everywhere you look. Personally, his over-the-top personality and passion for the game is wearing a little thin. His catch phrases like "Its a double-Dion!" or "He's a MONSTER!" are, frankly, overworked. His biases against composite sticks and head shots should be loosened from the Canadian airwaves. I think a fresh voice in the broadcast booth would be a good change.

Maybe it's about time for Pierre to take a break for the media industry and take a position behind the bench, certainly some team will take a chance on him, after all his knowledge and passion for the game are undeniable. Maybe even take some time off to spend with his wife and family.
