David Moyes Wants to Keep Landon Donovan; Will Donovan Stay?

Andrew JordanMar 6, 2010

For the first several months of the English Premier League season, Everton were lagging behind everyone else in the English Premier League as the Toffees found themselves in the bottom half of the table.

Even after a fifth-place finish the two previous seasons and advancing out of their group stage in the Europa League, Everton were major underachievers, and David Moyes' side needed someone to come in and help save their season.

They found their savior in a player who had never played in the Premier League and had failed in the German Bundelsiga on his two prior attempts to play in Europe before going to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The player is the greatest in the history of United States soccer: Landon Donovan.

Ever since his first appearance at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal on Jan. 9, Donovan and Everton both have had great moments as the Toffees have been able to climb to 10th in the table, and are again contending for a Europa League spot.

Since he has come to Goodison, Donovan has been able to net one goal (against Sunderland on Jan. 27), and has helped Everton beat the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United during this stretch.

He has now become a stabilizing figure on the wing for David Moyes' side, and this move has helped Donovan and Everton become better as they progress forward in the season.

But now, the honeymoon between Everton and Donovan is now sadly coming to an end, as the 10-week loan for Donovan is now due to end after Everton's match with Birmingham City on March 13.

But despite all of this, David Moyes has stated that he wants Donovan to stay put at Everton with an extension of the 10-eek loan.

In a recent interview, Moyes stated that "I am keen to keep Landon, and it sounds initially in America that he might say yes."

Along with that, Moyes added, "Landon is keen to stay, so it looks as though all parties are keen."

Even though he missed an open-net goal against Tottenham that resulted in only Everton's second Premier League loss since Donovan arrived, Donovan has played great and his performance has helped Everton to fix their season.

But now with Everton clearly wanting to keep Landon Donovan, now there is one major question remaining: will the Galaxy allow Donovan to stay for an extended period of time?

Currently, the Galaxy are without their two best players in Donovan and David Beckham (who is at AC Milan) on loan during the winter as the Major League Soccer season starts at the end of March with the Galaxy playing their first match against the New England Revolution on March 27.

Obviously, the Galaxy do not want to be losing Donovan to Everton due to his huge impact for them.

But, even though Donovan is committed to the Galaxy due to the new contract he signed there last year, this is still a World Cup year, and this extra training would definitely do him well.

So now, that Landon Donovan's time at Everton now appears to be over, will Donovan and David Moyes work with the Galaxy to get a loan extension or will Landon Donovan find himself back in California for the Galaxy at the end of the month against the Revolution?
