Is Reyes' Opening Day Absence a Cause for Concern for the Mets?

sdotcMar 4, 2010

The injury-stricken Mets have news that could be unsettling to some fans. Jose Reyes has been scratched from the Opening Day line-up in the first Spring Training game. The injury is listed as a hamstring concern, but Reyes claims that it is not a physical injury to his surgically repaired right leg. He insists that it was a concern involving blood work, and makes light of the doctors requiring some additional testing. An anomaly in a previous test required him to skip the game per the doctor's request.

Reyes is working to get back on the field after being sidelined since last May. He looked good during the intrasquad game, blasting a two-run triple in his first at bat.

Is this latest doctor's visit a cause for concern? Should fans and teammates be worried about him being healthy by the start of the season?

Answers come in on both sides...

Reyes himself says everything is fine:

“I'm good, man, yeah. It's nothing about my [surgically repaired] leg; nothing like that. The [blood] test that I have to do is more important than the game today, so I have to be sure that I'm ready to go when I step on that field. They do the tests because they want to make sure everything is fine.”

PeteInFLA voices concern in a comment on Hardball Talk:

"The Mets doctors had a "small concern" about his blood test? Like the Black Night in Monty Python's the Holy Grail, these guys usually proclaim "it's just a flesh wound". If I was Reyes and the Mets, I'd be very, very concerned.”

“Reyes said that his initial physical raised a small concern with doctors, so he needed to do additional blood work...and added that he has no physical problems. For now, view this as a minor bump in the road, but monitor it closely given the team's previous issues with dealing with ailments.”

JBaldwinChapmar makes a biting but poignant point in his NY Times comment:

“Isn't this typical of the Mets...? There's always something hanging in the interim - usually involving something medical. Do the Mets still have the same medical staff? If so, that's your answer to this question - here we go again. Nothing is ever quite ready...there's always a glitch.”

Where does the truth lie in all of this...? Likely somewhere in between. But Mets fans can be hopeful if they feed off Reyes' confidence.
