Top 5 Reasons Why Fans Don't Want Lesnar Vs. Mir III
Frank Mir talks a lot of trash, but that’s part of the reason why we love the guy. Who doesn’t have respect for his skill on the ground and ability to put big guys like Cheick Kongo to sleep in one round? Nonetheless, it’s evident that Mir’s mouth is bigger than his ability to man handle Lesnar. This showed during UFC 100. The following are five reasons why nobody really wants to see Lesnar and Mir fight again:
1) It would be a boring match. It’s the same old fight progression. We all know what happens when Lesnar and Mir fight: Lesnar keeps his distance at first, Mir acts calm and strikes, Lesnar responds with a clinch and before you know it, Lesnar’s in Mir’s half guard pummeling him. The only hope for an exciting match would be if Lesnar stupidly opens himself up for another basic submission, and judging from UFC 100, Lesnar already learned that lesson well.
2) Odds are Mir would lose again. I know that Mir said he would beat Brock Lesnar 99/100 times, but we all know that Mir was beat up both times in their past two matches. After getting beat up the first time they faced each other, Mir got lucky when Lesnar opened himself up for a submission. It was a fair win, but it doesn’t mean Mir didn’t hurt the most the next day. Lesnar is a huge guy with quick reflexes, a lot of power and he’s a former NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion. He’s not easy to beat, and everyone saw during how Mir was easily smothered and defeated during their second fight.
3) Lesnar vs. Mir III would not be Couture vs. Liddell III. Couture TKOd Liddell in their first fight. The world of MMA was shocked as nobody saw it coming. That’s because Couture was truly the underdog as his striking wasn’t as sound as Liddell’s and Liddell had great wrestling and takedown defenses. Lesnar was considered the underdog in his first fight with Mir, however Mir ended up being the underdog in the actual match. Sure, he came back to win, but Couture beat Liddell fair and square. Mir was fortunate to have Lesnar stand there while he worked the takedown to a knee bar.
4) A small chance of winning when your skill is already superior is nothing to be proud of. Mir had a chance to once again prove his skillful superiority in the Octagon in his second bout with Lesnar. The difference between their first and second match? In the first match, Lesnar was unassuming; in the second match, Lesnar was careful. I don’t think people want to go see a fighter go into a match hoping and praying to come out on top when his experience with fighting and submissions is already superior to such experience of his opponent. We saw in UFC 100 how Mir clinched Lesnar, tried to elbow him, tried put him in a guillotine, tried to knee him and what happened? Lesnar simply walked forward. This is all it took to take Mir down and smother him in the half guard.
5) We have waited nearly a year to see Lesnar challenged. How boring would it be to wait all this time and see someone not even challenge the heavyweight champ? Mir had his chance. Viewers aren’t looking for a Cinderella story between Lesnar and Mir; this is all about the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Let’s hope that Shane Carwin disposes of him to bring in more competition for Lesnar. If Carwin faced Lesnar, viewers would at least know there wouldn’t be a size advantage either way, which makes for an exciting match. If Carwin loses to Lesnar, Velasquez should put up a good fight. All-in-all, the viewers want to see someone challenge the big guy this time, and no offense to Mir, but he just didn’t bring it.
