Efrain Escudero had a perfect 13-0 record when he entered the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 20 as a heavy favorite to face Evan Dunham, but perhaps 13 proved to be his unlucky number.
Dunham locked in an armbar on "The Ultimate Fighter" season 8 champ early in the third round of their fight, eventually forcing a submission despite Escudero's attempt to hold out as long as possible. Although it was rumored after the fight that Escudero had suffered a broken arm, the injury luckily proved to be much less severe tendon damage.
Now Escudero has healed and is back training, preparing for a return this spring. He expects to be one of a number of former Ultimate Fighter champs, including Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin, on the card at UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas.
"I've had my fight. He caught me off guard and I took my first loss," Escudero blogged on MMABay.com. "I've gotta take this loss as a learning experience, learn from it, and carry on. I can't keep it in the back of my mind all the time. Gotta just put it aside and go back to the drawing board, look back at where I went wrong. I'm gonna start concentrating on my next opponent. The rumor so far is I'm gonna be fighting Dan Lauzon. I really can't confirm it at this point. I can however say I'm scheduled to fight at UFC 114. My arm was a little hurt after my last fight, but its fine now, it's back and ready for another war."
Escudero, who is currently a full-time student, has enjoyed some productive down-time during his recovery period.
"I've been concentrating a lot on schooling recently," Efrain wrote. "I'm getting ready to graduate from the Grand Canyon University on May 1st. After my last fight I was injured so I wasn't able to be in the gym, so I had to take a few weeks off. That time allowed me to catch up on my school and everything. Now I'm back in the normal routine and I'm looking forward to my next fight, my next training camp, and I'm stoked about it. I'm counting down the minutes and hours. At the moment I'm training with Ben Henderson, the WEC world champ at 155, as well as Edgar Garcia for this one, and hopefully I'll be able to talk about my fight next time around."
