My Thoughts On The Recent Pro Wrestling Debate
Sports have so much to offer us fans. Tons of action, high intensity, and non-stop drama are just a few redeeming qualities.
Perhaps the greatest functionality of the world of sports are the various opinions that people form and the debates that spark up as a result.
Over the past few days here on B/R, there has been an intense debate as to the merits of professional wrestling and whether or not it constitutes a place on this website.
It started as one man’s humorous crusade to raise the ire of the wrestling community; and yes, he is indeed entitled to his opinion.
What has transpired over the last few days has truly been a sight to behold.
The author’s article was met with immediate backlash from the wrestling community. Many felt that they were being mocked for something they enjoyed, while others harped about how they felt wrestling is fake and that those who watch it are foolish for doing so.
Though I’m not sure what the author’s true motives were for penning such an article, the responses and comments were long and passionate on both ends.
Wrestling fans were defending their point of view, acknowledging that wrestling might not be sport in the true sense of the word; but that nothing should be taken away from the athletes and performers that dedicate themselves to this profession.
Others from outside the wrestling section eventually jumped into the fray as well.
Some were quick to side with the author, agreeing with his sentiments about the state of wrestling and how everyone needs to grow up at some point.
Others sided with the wrestling fans, stating that even though they are not themselves fans of the sport, nothing should be taken away from those individuals who do enjoy wrestling.
For the same reason it was Dick Normandy’s right to write his series of articles, it is the right of all wrestling fans to disagree with him.
Ultimately, B/R decided to delete Dick’s series of anti-wrestling articles, and I must say I disagree with the decision.
Were the articles a constant mockery and constant prodding of wrestling fans?
Yes.
Did his articles inspire a series of spirited debates and discussion that really highlighted how well educated the wrestling community is?
Yes.
This in the end comes down to the First Amendment, whereas everyone is entitled to free speech.
I will not sugarcoat anything, I wholeheartedly disagreed with Dick’s arguments; I am a huge wrestling fan.
While the basis of him writing the articles may have been misguided; he still was forming an opinion and elicited a good amount of responses.
Wrestling fans are a much more educated lot then people give them credit for; Dick Normandy’s series of anti-wrestling articles should had remained on the website as a way to show how passionate and knowledgeable wrestling fans are.
As a last side note, I read in one of the comments that Dick Normandy was recovering from a very bad accident, so I would like to wish him a very speedy recovery.
