Former Raider QB Could Be Useful Across The Bay

Kevin AndresFeb 22, 2010

When the Raiders received a call from Rich Gannon offering his services to help Jamarcus Russell, the Silver and Black told him to take a hike, get bent, and seek professional help for delusions of granduer. That just shows what the Raider organization has fallen into. How dare they turn their back on the Raiders last All-pro quarterback since Jim Plunkett. Gannon was a leader of this Raider team, led Oakland to a Super Bowl appearance for the first time since 1981. Gannon had all sorts of regular season records and Gannon had the help of 2010 Hall of Famer, Jerry Rice and future Hall of Famer and long time Raider, Tim Brown, at the same time, on the same field. Gannon was a leader by example, first to show up to work and last to leave work. When he spoke, he gained the attention of the entire team. The Raiders lack of everything mentioned above. Bruce Gradkowski has won a few games by himself not with the team. JRussell doesn't look like he wants the role of leader. Well Al Davis, why won't you let your former all-pro quarterback tutor your current quarterbacks? Easy answer, it seems Al Davis has personal issues with anybody or anything that has to do with the Bill Walsh family tree. For instance...Mike Shanahan,a former 49ers Offensive Coordinator and Denver Head Coach...Fired, Mike White...Fired, Jon Gruden, former Green Bay assisant under Mike Holmgren,a former 49ers Offensive Coordinator. Fired Gruden a year before the Raiders play in the Super Bowl. Of course, Lane Kiffen, a former USC Trojan assistant under Head Coach Pete Carroll, a former 49ers Defensive Coordinator under Head Coach George Seifert. Kiffen did play a part in his firing too. That is the only explaination as to why Al Davis does NOT want Rich Gannon to coach the quarterbacks or just to be on the coaching staff.

Why not Rich Gannon travel to the other side of the bay. If Rich Gannon really wants to help and feels that he has alot to offer, he could be really useful to 49er QB corps. Alex Smith is NOT getting the tutoring he really needs. Smith has had 5 offensive coordinators in 5 seasons. Smith's only real tutor was...Trent Dilfer...c'mon man, he is the " Accidental Super Bowl QB", Dilfer didn't win his ring, Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Defense won that Super Bowl alone. Dilfer just happened to be there. Jeff Garcia didn't stick around too long...too bad. Rich Gannon as the 49ers QB coach, not a bad idea. Alex Smith, former No. 1 pick, Shaun Hill, the 49ers starting Qb for the first half of the season, and Nate Davis, 3rd round pick from Ball State, where he was All-conference. The 49ers have talent at the QB position. Smith showed he can lead the San Francisco 49ers. Smith showed he has grown up. Smith showed he can win by himself. Smith needs to get those attributes sharpened, refined. Ron Jaworski of ESPN, has commented that Alex Smith has a habit that disables him to use full strength to throw the long ball and thats why those long throws come up short.

Mike Johnson is doing a hella of job, don't get me wrong. But why not bring in someone, a former All-Pro, to see why Alex Smith can't throw the long ball. Have an expert teach how to handle pocket pressure better. Have an expert teach when to throw and when to run. Have an expert teach how to read defenses better. There were many times the 49ers couldve burned teams just by audibling when seeing a stacked 8 eight man front. Nate Davis can develop better too. He had good preseason not to mention. Rich Gannon can't fix all the offensive problems like the need to improve the O-line but at least he could attempt to make some field generals like he was.
