Tiger Woods Press Conference: Anti-Climax for Golf, Volcanic on Google
The world's most famous sportsman came and stood in front of family, friends, gave the most highly anticipated statement in the world, and left.
A supposed five-minute speech turned into a 14-minute one, as Tiger Woods apologised for his "irresponsible and selfish behaviour," admitting for the first time to his wife Elin Nordegren, "I was unfaithful, I had affairs, I cheated. What I did was unacceptable."
And somewhat anti-climatically, Woods said: "I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don't know what day that will be. I don't rule out that it could be this year."
Pundits, journalists, and fans alike were anticipating a return to action in the coming weeks from the World No. 1, but instead were disappointed as a sullen Tiger revealed he is going back for more therapy before returning to the sport.
It was a statement from Tiger Woods that showed he is anything but the standard the world's best golfer should be.
Speaking in a lifeless, monotonous tone throughout, Woods looked like a shaken man hit hard by what has happened to him; a man who currently has lost his usual attributes which lead him to success at the highest level in golf.
But in a statement broadcast to hundreds of millions across the globe that included incredibly little about golf, the sport that gave Tiger Woods the identity he has today, the USA's top golfer seemed more concerned about his ego than anything else.
Despite very little flexibility given for the date of this announcement, the simple fact is Woods' statement didn't necessarily need to be televised in front of the world.
No questions from journalists were allowed, and the statement was only about Tiger Woods and what Tiger Woods has done wrong and what Tiger Woods is going to do in the future.
Such a simple, bland statement could've easily been published on his website.
Instead, it seems like Tiger Woods wants the name and face of Tiger Woods pushed out to the world more than ever.
Well, the star behind the Tiger Woods PGA Tour videogames amongst other things, will be happy with the outcome.
The whole world tuned in to see him and what he had to say, and he has so many searches on Google that he tops the trends in places all over the world.
His name has been searched so many times in recent hours, the hotness on Google Trends is volcanic!
So it's as good of a statement for Google as it is bad for the sport of golf.
The sport's best player, the man, the players, journalists, sponsors and most importantly, the fans, want to see, will remain out of golf longer than most expected.
A costly period it could be then for golf, as Tiger Woods chooses to protect and rebuild his ego over a fairly immediate return to the sport, something that would've probably been in the best interests of all parties involved, even Woods himself.
