NFL Speculator: Heaven Help Teams That Need Quarterbacks!

TheNFL SpeculatorFeb 17, 2010

Why is Rams QB Marc Bulger looking down?

Because he's looking at the ball he just fumbled, that's why!

And, just to let the Rams know he really does think he sucks as their quarterback, he recently cleaned out his locker.

But it appears the Rams aren't the only team who might be looking for a new or used QB this off-season, and some of those teams looking for one might surprise you.

So, starting with the NFC East, let's take a look at what each team has and see who might need a new QB. Then we will see who is available for a possible fit.

Giants: Really, despite the fact that the Giants seemed to implode as the year went on, I can't see why Eli Manning shouldn't stay the franchise in Giant-ville.

Eagles: Too bad, Philly fans, because McNabb is better than anyone else they got and is still their best QB for a shot at the Super Bowl title.

Cowboys: What with Tony Romo actually showing he can play in December and January, I see no reason why the Pokes should use anyone but.

Redskins: Jason Campbell isn't the best, but he's not the worst either. Now that the Skins actually have some serious folks running the operation, I think Campbell should be given at least one more try at trying to get this team upward and onward.

Vikings: You know I wouldn't want to be a Vikes fan these days! If Favre stays, they likely don't have anything to worry about. But that's a big IF. What if the Master of FavreWatch decides, say, on August 1, to retire...which will leave Clueless without a bonafide QB? Because don't expect "Chilly" to push The Man as to whether he'll stay in Minny or not, because The Chill needs The Clue if you know what I mean.

Packers: Rodgers is becomeing one of the tops. Nough said.

Bears: Cutler stays with a new coaching staff which has worked with him.

Lions: Stafford is getting worked on for next season, and he really was the best the Lions put out this past season. QB is NOT the biggest concern in Motor City (Ex-Motor City?) anyway!

Saints: I don't see Brees winning another Supe, but he is certainly the best Who Dat Nation has had in a long time! (And, maybe ever!)

Falcons: Matt Ryan had a slight sophomore slump. So what?

Panthers: Oh boy! I would say Jake Delhomme is better than some and worse than others, and he costs a lot. Still, like I said, he's better than some... But the Panthers have this tendency to go up one year, down the next, and then back up, so I don't think the big cats will do a whole lot to have someone else come in and do the job in 2010.

Bucs: Freeman played like a rookie at times last year and as a real pro at other times. Recently saw his playing on a couple of games on NFL Game Rewind and was impressed with how he led the hapless Bucs almost back to respectability later in the season last year. He's definitely the best they have.

Cards: We will have to wait and see if Matt Linehart is the franchise of the Bust of the Decade, in 2010. (Note: Do NOT expect the Arizonians to make it back to the playoffs this year!)

49ers: For a team that many experts are predicting to win the weak NFC West in 2010, the Niners do NOT have a QB yet that can justify that prediction! Patrick Willis does NOT play QB and they can't play Gore on every play.

Rams: I say go for a top QB prospect in the draft. But, since the Rams likely won't go that route, I say do the next best thing and go for a "stop-gap" QB who is a proven "team turn-around-er," Chad Pennington. I can't see the Fins re-signing him (because I don't care what the man says--he isn't going to sit idly by as a second stringer behind Henne). Who cares about weak arm when Pennington has a proven ability to take a really bad team into the promised land? And the Rams are a really bad team!

Seahawks: They have the same situation the Panthers and Vikings do. Hasselbeck is on his way out, but he is still the best one there, and Seattle has greater needs than QB...for one thing, they need protection for him what with aging land retiring linemen around him.

Bills: There are a couple of teams that have worse QB situations than the Bills, but the real quandry is having three or four QBs that aren't terrible, just aren't serious, either. Trent Edwards, IMHO, is a mystery. I really thought the Bills had a good one there, but when Ryan Fitzpatrick brings the team a few TDs from behind to beat the Fins I gotta wonder if this journeyman isn't the answer.

Dolphins: So what if Chad Henne isn't Dan Marino? The Fins have had umpteen QBs come in since Dan the Man and I'd say if Henne can improve on his interception quandry he found himself in late in 2009, then Fins fans can stop whining (or is that too much to ask?).

Pats: Brady has a few more years left. But BB needs to start considering whom will replace him is what happened in 2008 happens again behind a weakening OL (due to age, with Kaczur, Light, and Koppen getting up there in years). He may wish he never had Matt Cassel traded.

Jets: Before everyone picks the Ryan Bunch to win the next Super Bowl, the House that Namath Built ought to consider what might happen if the "Sanchize" needs a good back up.

Steelers: Who saw the downfall of the Steel Curtain this past year? QB is not a problem unless Pittsburgh's declining OL makes it one!

Ravens: Aging defense, not QB, is going to be a problem the Ravens will have to address.

Bengals: Whom will we see in 2010? Carson Palmer like he was a couple of years ago, or Carson Palmer the "game manager" behind the running of Cedric Benson, or Carson Palmer, the washed-up injury-prone QB? Whichever it is will define whether the Bengals stay the Bengals or revert to the "Bungles."

Browns: Yep, the Browns are one of those teams that really ought to draft or sign one of the free agent QBs. (Note: Since we are dealing with Eric Mangini here, it wouldn't be out of the realm of speculation if the Browns grabbed Chad Pennington, who played for the "Genius" on the Jets, and whose play in 2008 winning the AFC East for Miami over his Jets wound up getting him fired. Does it sound like I think Pennington is the best of the free agent QBs? Because I think he is).

Colts: Only if Peyton goes down.

Texans: Houston, we have no problem!

Titans: Young appears to also be for real, but who knows?

Jaguars: This team is the Panthers of the AFC, with the same sort of QB quandry. Except that Moore might actually take over for Girard this year.

Chargers: No QB problem here.

Broncos: Orton appeared to revert to the mean after a strong start. Now let's see what he can do without Mike Nolan running an overachieving defense.

Chiefs: Did KC fans actually think Cassel could do for Arrowhead fans what he did for New England? Still, I say keep the guy around and wait for the rest of the team to catch up.

Raiders: Al Davis should crawl under a rock somewhere and hide for what he did to his old time team in drafting the worst QB draft pick EVER in the NFL draft, Jamarcus Russell, who makes Rodney Peet and Ryan Leaf look like Hall of Famers!
