Texas in the Big Ten? Not Out of the Question

Bryan DietzlerFeb 15, 2010

Recent news reports have stated that talks are have started between the University of Texas and the Big Ten in hopes of getting the Longhorns to join one of the country’s proudest football conferences.  Although the commissioner of the Big Ten states there have been no formal talks between the Big Ten and any team (at this time),wouldn’t it be nice to have the Longhorns in the Big Ten?

To think the Longhorns could be playing teams like Iowa, Ohio State, and Michigan on a regular basis—would this be something that fans in the Big Ten would be receptive to?  Would the Big 12 conference miss Texas?

When the Big Ten added an 11th team (the Penn State Nittany Lions) no one was really opposed to the change. Although the addition of Penn State didn’t bring any new rivalries to the Big Ten conference, rivalries have since developed, especially between Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan.

The addition of Texas would add some rivalries to the conference and help make the Big Ten even better.

What else would the addition of Texas to the Big Ten bring to the conference?

Money.

Texas has a large following of fans and is one of the biggest and best “shows” in college football.  It can be assured that Big Ten games featuring Texas will become some of the biggest games in the conference and every stadium will be sold out when the Longhorns come to town.

Texas may not run the table in the Big Ten but they would sure bring a lot to one of college football’s most storied conferences.  The competition would get much better in the Big Ten and finally there would be a chance to have conference championship games.  A conference championship game would help make the conference even bigger than it already is and make things much more fair in deciding a champion for the conference.

A lot of people feel that if Texas decided to go into the Big Ten they would end up being less than stellar and would not be as dominant as they have been before.  However, the Longhorns would only help improve things for the conference and would help draw a lot more people to the games than perhaps they have had.  They would also make things much more interesting in the Big Ten and would make the conference that much better.

So even though there haven’t been any formal talks as of yet it’s nice to think about the possibility of Texas joining the Big Ten conference.  Wouldn’t it be great if the Big Ten had a team the caliber of the Texas Longhorns?  Won’t that make things much more interesting in college football?

We may get a chance to find out in the future.
