Free Agency: The Broncos Greatest Positions Of Need

Darrin WashingtonFeb 10, 2010

It's been another year of football and another 8-8 season for the Broncos.  Despite being wildly successful the first half of the year the Broncos failed to make the playoffs again.  Looking ahead, with a few additions the Broncos could be a very good team in the seasons to come.  Let's take a look at these needs.

Backup Quarterback

Chris Simms played very poorly in the limited action he got this past year.  Bronco fans are hoping to never see him again in blue and orange.  If Kyle Orton is not replaced by a rookie through the draft then there needs to be a reliable veteran behind him.

Possible solution: Chad Pennington, QB Miami Dolphins

Center

Casey Weigmann seemed to get less and less of a push as the year went on.  While the draft is most likely the best way to remedy the center spot, there are a few good free agents that may hit the market.

Possible solution: Kevin Mawae, C Tennessee Titans

Defensive End

Ryan McBean and Kenny Peterson played decently for what they bring to the table.  Neither player is that monster pass rushing, run stopping, elite 3-4 DE that is needed to take a defense to that next level.  Again a player could be brought in through the draft to fix this if a top tier free agent is not brought in.

Possible solution: Richard Seymour, DE Oakland Raiders

Punter

Bronco fans wouldn't be sad if Mitch Berger decided to retire after the way he punted this year.  Field position is so important in today's offensively dominated NFL.

Possible solution: Any punter except for Mitch Berger

Kick Returner

If Eddie Royal is going to get back to form, then maybe he should spend less time doing kickoffs.  Peyton Hillis certainly isn't an acceptable solution to run kick backs either.  Even if Royal is going to stay on spot kick return duty, competition will never hurt.

Possible solution: Clifton Smith, KR Tampa Bay Buccaneers

These are just a few positions of need and possible solutions for the Broncos.  Of course the team could always decide to use draft and trades to improve these positions.  Then again, they could fix nothing.  Or they could even change a current player's position.  No matter what happens this off season looks to be another interesting one!
