What the Dallas Cowboys Need to Do in the Offseason

Phillip SchmitzFeb 10, 2010
Here is what I would do entering the offseason if I were the Dallas Cowboys

1. Work on Offensive Line in the Draft or Free Agency

Minnesota exposed a huge flaw in the Cowboys offense with being able to bring pressure at will on every single play. Tony Romo barely had three seconds before he had to move out of the pocket due to the pressure of the Vikings defensive line. Leonard Davis was just standing around on several plays, and Flozell Adams being injured effected the protection. But Flozell didn't do any better than Doug Free, so that was a non-factor. However, Free did do a better job filling in for Mark Columbo, who broke his leg in the middle of the year.
I think in this draft they need to fix that issue by drafting a guard or a tackle, if not in the draft then by finding someone during free agency.

2. Put Roy Williams on the Trade Market

This year, Roy Williams was supposed to be the guy to replace Terrell Owens. Luckily for Dallas, Miles Austin filled the void because Roy Williams didn't come close to filling it at all. With Williams being a bust so far in Dallas, trading him to a team who is willing to give up another position player is one option to get rid of Williams.

A possible replacement for Williams could be Denver's Brandon Marshall. Marshall would fit nicely in Dallas, and Dallas owner Jerry Jones should have no problem opening up his wallet.
If Dallas doesn't trade Roy Williams, hopefully that will light a fire under him and start to prove people wrong, because there are a lot of people in Dallas that aren't particularly happy of his play since his debut here. If he can't get the job done, Dallas is going to have to find someone else.

3. Fire Jason Garrett

Some people are high on Jason Garrett, but I'm not one of those guys that is smoking the Reggie Bush. Garrett hasn't done anything on offense in his three years. Let's face it, he becomes one-dimensional at times. Also, he has a habit of running plays that are generic and can be read by opposing defenses.
So, Jason is gone in my mind. Who would I have replace him? Mike Martz is first on my list. Not because I'm a Rams fan, but because he knows how to run an offense. Dallas has many weapons on offense, and he could be able to help Roy Williams get more open opportunites and fix his issues. He did a good job with Torry Holt. But Chicago already knocked on Martz's door and offered him a job with the Bears.

4. Bye Bye Barbarian, and What's Left of Marion Barber

Marion Barber is no longer the feature back in my mind for Dallas. Heck, he's not even in the backup role in the future as well if it were my choice. As a pure running back, Tashard Choice is my guy.
He can run the tough carries and he has good hands, something Barber lacks. Also, Barber can't get a yard when they need it most in short-yardage situations. On the same token, Garrett has called plays that don't suit his running style, like toss plays and running on the outside.
Thats not Barber. My backup would be Felix Jones, and he will be the guy I would use to spread the defense east and west and use to make big plays with the run. Barber cannot do that. Barber can't even run; he runs like a horse. Just gallops to a first down and then gets up and acts like he just scored a TD.
5. Repair Whatever Is Wrong with Jason Witten

Witten for some reason didn't look like the same Witten of years past. Either he hit an old-year wall where his numbers and his age caught up to him, or the wear and tear from last year affected him. He still had his catches, but it looked like he wasn't able to make big plays downfield.
In 2007 and 2008 Witten was able to have big games and had more touchdowns than he did last year. He still was Romo's favorite target in 2009. Hopefully, Witten will be more rested coming into next year, and we will see that Witten that we saw 2 to 3 years ago.

6. Get Rid of Terrance Newman

Has he ever covered someone in the NFL? Thats not a haha question, that's a pretty serious question. He's been in this league for a while now, so why is he getting beat every week by the receiver he is lined up against? He can't cover anyone on defense, and he cant tackle one-on-one.
Mike Jenkins has become the number one cornerback on the defense, and Orlando Scandrick in my mind is capable of replacing Newman if he continues to get better. Jenkins did a good job on Rice during the playoffs against the Vikings, Favre just made some perfect throws that only Favre could throw

7. Fire Wade Phillips

I have this last on my list because of one reason: Who would you have replace him? If you fire Wade Phillips, there aren't many coaches out there that will replace his void. The two guys that will be talked a lot will be Brian Billick and Jon Gruden. Bill Cowher is rumored to not be interested in any coaching jobs, and might be waiting until next year to coach again. But if Dallas brings the right amount to the table, maybe that changes his mind. Also keep in mind, he runs the defense so you will have to look for a defensive cordinator.
But thats all for nothing with Wade getting a three-year contract to remain the head coach, but I wouldn't be suprised if Jones showed him the door if Phillips can't get them into the Super Bowl next year. Remember, the game is in Dallas after all.
