Kansas City Chiefs: What I Would Do As GM

Ron TepperFeb 10, 2010

Over the last few weeks I added a few articles ranging from free agency and the NFL Draft to the coaching changes that have taken place. I would like to tie it all together now, though knowing there will be changes in the coming weeks.

Coaching

Coaching has changed recently, but there are three coaching changes I'd make.

TOP NEWS

Rams Seahawks Football
Mississippi Football

1) Hire Will Shields or Mike Solari as offensive line coach

 2) Hire Mike Vrabel as linebacker coach and Bobby Engram WR Coach.

Free Agency

OK, I know what you are saying, "Do we really need more ex-New England Patriots?" The answer is yes. If we are looking at an uncapped season, the Pats will have the best free agents on the market, so why not? Here's what I propose

Sign

Tully Banta Cain (OLB) Had 10 sacks in 10 games last year. Start him opposite Hali.

Ben Watson (TE) Knows the offense and is easily better than any Kansas City TE.

Stephen Neal (OG) Had a solid year. Sign him for one year and put him at right guard

Chester Taylor (RB) Not a Pat, but that's OK. He is the No. 2 RB behind Charles. Both Charles and Flowers may need shoulder surgery in the upcoming weeks. Ouch.

Vince Wilfolk (DT) Trade our Gonzalez pick from Atlanta for him. He wants out.

Resign Chambers, Wade, Smith, and Brown

Trade

Glenn Dorsey for a first round pick. I hate to see him go but he doesn't fit.

Draft

1) Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama, starts at inside linebacker

1) Brian Bulaga, ORT, Iowa, starts at right offensive tackle

2) Maukice Pouncey, C, Florida, starts at center

3) Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas, starts at slot receiver

4) Antonio Coleman, OLB, Auburn, sack artist shares time with Cain. Expect 12 sacks.

5) Jonathan Jerry, ORG, Ole Miss, groom for one-year behind Neal

5) Barry Church, SS, Toledo, will challenge Mike Brown from day one

5) Kyle McCarthy, SS, Notre Dame, Also in the Brown/Church mix.

6) Brandon Banks, KR, Kansas State-Little "mighty mite" 5'5" kick returner

FA) Mike Tepper, OT, California- Distant cousin. Had to throw him in here

Now lets look at the end result.

Offense

RB Jamal Charles/Chester Taylor

TE Ben Watson

WR Chris Chambers

WR Dwayne Bowe

WR Jordan Shipley

OT Brandon Albert

OG Brian Watters

C Maukice Pouncey

OG Stephen Neal

OT Brian Bulaga

DEFENSE

DE Tyson Jackson

NT Vince Wilfolk

DE Alex McGee

OLB Tamba Hali

ILB Rolando McClain

ILB Derrick Johnson

OLB Tully Banta Cain/Coleman

SS Brown / Church / McCarthy / McGraw

WS Jared Page

CB Brandon Carr / Leggett

CB Brandon Flowers/ Washington

That would be a great start to this season.

All holdover players not mentioned are the depth

ONE FINAL NOTE- Consider moving 2 Offensive Tackles to the other side of the ball and play them as 3/4 DE.

Barry Richardson-Time has run out, but he is a great athlete. At about 6'6 310 if he plays with passion, he could make it. What difference does it make if they are going to cut him anyway?

Colin Brown-Last year's #5 pick-he is not going to make it at OT. His feet are too slow in pass protection and he is too tall to play Guard. But what about DE?

They say that DE in the 3/4 need size and strength to occupy blockers and keep the Linebackers clean. This guy is 6"7 335lbs. Makes sense to me.

The Defensive Line was pushed around too much this year. This guy will not be pushed around by anyone.
