From Zero to Hero: Tracy Porter Savior in Saints Run to the Super Bowl

Evan HigginsFeb 8, 2010

Coming into the postseason, no one really knew of a player named Tracy Porter. Now, a day after the Super Bowl, Tracy Porter becomes as big a name as anyone around the league.

The postseason yet again shows how it can easily turn a nobody into a somebody.

He's a second year cornerback out of Indiana, drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He played, and started, in five games during his rookie season before being placed on injured reserve with an injured wrist.

He went down on the depth chart in training camp after the additions of Malcolm Jenkins and Darren Sharper during the offseason.

Porter slowly regained his starting spot due to injuries, starting in 12 games, picking off the quarterback four times, and making 57 tackles along with two forced fumbles.

Against the Minnesota Vikings, the New Orleans Saints were able to beat Brett Favre and the Vikings horrendous offense, and go on to play the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl 44.

But the Saints never would have won it if it wasn't for Tracy Porter's game-saving interception against future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.

Porter's name was already bigger then ever.

Then it was time for the game he brought the Saints to, Super Bowl 44. Yet again, against another future Hall of Fame quarterback, Peyton Manning.

Manning picked on Porter all day, throwing his way many times.

Porter showed Manning who's boss and ended the game when he picked off Manning with 3:22 left in the game, returning an interception 74 yards for the touchdown, putting the game away for the Saints, with a 31-17 final score.

But, Porter shouldn't be given all the credit.

Congratulations to all of New Orleans. After everything that happened with Hurricane Katrina, the state became close with the Saints team, and everyone of "Who Dat" Nation deserved this win more then anyone.
