So Who Does a College Football Fan Pull For In The Super Bowl?
Larry Burton (Panama City Beach, Fl.). This Sunday I had no dog in the hunt. I live and breathe college football and don't really carry a torch for any professional team, so with guests arriving soon to enjoy a Super Bowl party at my house, I wondered who I would root for. My friends would demand to know.
While Peyton Manning played for Tennessee under Phillip Fulmer, I disliked Fulmer so much that I could never pull for the Colts with Peyton leading them. Plus, I couldn't name an Alabama player on the roster, so I guess that's another good reason.
The Saints have Roman Harper, an Alabama grad and a heck of a great guy, so I guess I'm a Saints guy on this one.
Plus, there's that underdog thing. Anytime I don't have a dog in the hunt, I usually gravitate toward the underdog.
The Saints being the "Southern" team means nothing to me either.
You see, this can't be a North vs South Super Bowl. Once players get to the pros, they are so mixed there's no real definition anymore about roots. The only thing I'm sure of is that in all likelihood, no one on either team was born or went to school in Indianapolis or New Orleans.
In fact, few are probably from the state where their team calls home.
I know these are facts I should look up before writing, but what's the point? I simply don't care enough about the NFL to make it worth my while.
I'm much more concerned about why Alabama's new signee DeAndrew White didn't finish high school early enough to enroll in January than I am about almost anything in the NFL.
Now, I know there are good and true sports fans who love their NFL teams the way I do my college ones...
My question is why?
Ok, if you live in that city, alright, I get it. Other than that, I don't.
NFL players go to the team that pays the highest dollar. Being an NFL player is a job, it's not a calling like college football. Most who play college football know this is it. They do it for a scholarship and an education, a hotter group of girls to date, or maybe because it's just always been a dream to don that particular team's jersey and be a part of that tradition.
Any one of those reasons beats joining the NFL because you are offered $1.2 million or more over 2 years.
So why watch the game at all?
Hey, it's the Super Bowl! The commercials alone make it worth the watch. So does the excuse to throw a party and eat pounds of otherwise useless food, drinks, and snacks.
So get your nachos, beer, and buddies together and enjoy the game, or the commercials, and may the best team win.
