Tomlinson's Exit Imminent: Running Back Considers Chargers Departure

James SkerrittFeb 5, 2010

Alas, even when you post 10+ touchdowns every season of your career and become regarded as a future hall of fame running back, it isn't enough.

That was the story yesterday as LaDainian Tomlinson reported that he wasn't expecting to stay with the San Diego Chargers for next season. It is clear that the team has turned over its franchise into the capable hands of Philip Rivers, who will now be the de facto leader of Norv Turner's offense.

However, Tomlinson's impending exit could have an effect on the backfield of one of several teams in the NFL who could possibly welcome LT this summer, as well as the upcoming draft.

Let's start with the 2010 draft, where San Diego currently picks 28th. At that spot, they could easily select Clemson's C.J. Spiller or California's Jahvid Best. Either running back would be great prospects for offensive rookie of the year and solid draft prospects for fantasy teams.

Such a scenario would be a welcome departure from last year, where rookies Knowshon Moreno, Beanie Wells, LeSean McCoy, and Donald Brown were all selected and chucked into committee situations.

As for Tomlinson, he could end up in the following spots:

Houston—The Texans really struggled to run the ball, relying on the prowess of Pro Bowl MVP Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson to make plays. Arian Foster, Chris Brown, and Ryan Moats were not able to get the job done and look unlikely to produce for Gary Kubiak's offense in the future. Tomlinson would immediately be installed as a secondary RB to Steve Slaton as he recovers from recent neck surgery. The addition of Tomlinson could help push this team into the playoffs for the first time in its young history. It also helps that LT is a native of Houston.

Cleveland– Although the Browns are unlikely to contend for the playoffs anytime soon, Cleveland is a place where LT would become a starter and get the majority of carries. Despite the success of Jerome Harrison late in the year, this team needs a reliable running back to replace Jamal Lewis and take some of the pressure off of Brady Quinn, who has come under fire for his lackluster performances.

New England– In my opinion, the ideal place for Tomlinson. Belichick tends to use more experienced running backs in his offense (see Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor, and Sammy Morris). Tomlinson may lack the break-away speed he once had, but he still carries the necessary tools to block, catch, and get into the endzone. Plus the LT-Brady combo sounds too good to pass up.

Tampa Bay– The Bucs endured a terrible year under rookie coach Raheem Morris, and LT could help bring back a little more hope and enthusiasm for the pewter and red. This season was only the first year that Cadillac Williams has managed to complete without suffering any injury. Add the fact that both Derrick Ward and Earnest Graham disappointed, it soon becomes clear that the Bucs could use a little help.

With Antonio Bryant perhaps leaving through free agency and Josh Freeman heading into his second year, LT's experience and leadership would be welcomed. The addition of LT would also allow the Bucs to use the draft to concentrate on rebuilding their defense which was decimated last year due to the departures of key players.

Philadelphia– The Eagles would be an interesting destination for LT. The team is still figuring out what to do with Brian Westbrook, whose injuries are greatly reducing his ability to make positive contributions. McCoy was a little inconsistent in his first year and the Eagles may decide that LT could help the rookie in his learning process. The Eagles also made the playoffs this year and would be favorites to win the NFC East with LT on board.
