Super Bowl XLIV: Why The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Could Have an Impact

Ryan CookFeb 4, 2010

It's funny that certain areas in sports are so riddled with curses. The Jets have had them when they struggle to win at Giants Stadium; the previous sluggish Boston Red Sox went through a notorious one when they couldn't win a World Series since the departure of Babe Ruth; and even the NFL's video game Madden has dished out some injuries to players that have been lucky enough to grace the cover.

These curses we are well aware of, and to be quite frank, many of us find them rather amusing. One team isn't finding their new found curse amusing though, and that is the New Orleans Saints.

After going through NFL facts and trivia, I came across the statistic that nearly blew me off of my seat. Luckily I managed to hold on long enough to write this article. The statistic was that no team has won a Super Bowl after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the regular season. Well gee, New Orleans, there's something to think about.

How fitting for me to write this on the day of demolition of the old Giants stadium. It's almost like an omen is it not? Well I guess it could be.

Nonetheless, New Orleans can either let this statistic play on their minds, or they can just block it out and continue with the ever exciting Super Bowl lead up that many players get a little too involved in. Either way, the rest of the NFL fans aren't to concerned. But should Sean Payton be?

Well I guess so. If curses have ever proved true, it's that they aren't to be messed with in the NFL, and that they deliver at the most inopportune times. The Super Bowl may be just the playground for the Tampa Bay Bucs gods to throw their wrath upon the Saints.

The offensive genius Sean Payton won't be worried, but Buccaneer fans may be watching the game with a sinister smile on their face as they feel a loss coming to the city of New Orleans.

As far as curses go, this one could be among the most legitimate. It is the Super Bowl after all, and the fate of a city that is dependent on their team is at hand. If the curse does prove to be true, it will be a talking point. At the moment it has barely been mentioned, but expect New Orleans fans to bring it up if a loss is the outcome on Sunday.

It's not a big deal, but it's something to keep in mind. Especially since this is the Saints' first Super Bowl, and they are considered true contenders. The curse is coming boys, it's just a matter of if, rather than when.
