National Signing Day 2010: Florida Gators Have Four Top-10 Recruits
It's national letter-of-intent signing day and it doesn't appear that the disappointing end to the Florida Gators' season, nor the news that coach Urban Meyer is taking of leave of absence, has slowed down interest in the program.
The four letter network has what they call the ESPNU 150, and according to their rating system, Florida has nabbed the top player, defensive end Ronald Powell of Moreno Valley, Calif.
The Gators have also received verbal committments from four other players in the ESPNU 150, including two other top 10 recruits, defensive tackle Dominique Easley of Staten Island, N.Y., and safety Jonathan Dowling of Bradenton, Fla.
Rounding out the top recruiting class is Matt Elam, who played running back and linebacker in high school, but appears destined to play defense in college.
These ESPN rankings are often difficult to believe, as projecting a high school player is a difficult task to say the least. Kids don't stop growing sometimes until they are in their very early 20s, so assigning a numerical ranking may be folly.
Still, it's one way to measure a recruiting class and according to them, Florida was on top, followed by Texas and Alabama.
There are still some undeclared players who are considered highly by thie system, such as offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson of St. Paul, Minn., and Demar Dorsey , a safety from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Henderson appears to be headed to USC.
Meanwhile, we all know that some of these guys may not make the grades or may transfer. Even so, it shouldn't be surprising that the three best programs in college football have the top recruiting classes.
So far, it's been a tough day for Georgia. The Bulldogs have lost two recruits, one to USC and the other to Tennessee.
Letter of intent? Remember, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
