Denver Broncos Mock Draft V 2.0: The Senior Bowl Fallout

Nick CastilloFeb 2, 2010

Hey Bronco fans. Another week has gone by and a lot has changed in the mock draft universe. The senior bowl has come and gone and players have certainly left their mark.

This mock draft will be just like my last one. I will be putting the people I think we might draft as well as a sleeper pick for each round. Once again, a sleeper pick is someone who McDaniels will select that will surprise all of us, similar to Knowshon Moreno last year. With that being said, let us begin.

Round One

TOP NEWS

Colts Jaguars Football
Rams Seahawks Football
Mississippi Football

Terrence Cody- NT from Alabama.

Last time I picked Dez Bryant. However, until Marshall is traded, I am not going to have us selecting a Wide Receiver in the first round. We have too many other needs.

Terrence Cody came to the Senior Bowl and weighed in at 6-foot-5 and 370 pounds. 370 pounds is an alarming number. It did cause some scouts to worry about his dedication to the offseason. However, with all of the training necessary before the season, I am sure Cody would be in prime shape for the season. He would be a perfect 3-4 nose tackle. He is so big that he requires two men to block him. If they don't double him then he can simply get into the backfield and cause problems. He would be a huge upgrade to our defensive line.

Sleeper Pick: Brandon Graham DE from Michigan.

Graham was one of the best at the Senior Bowl. He earned Senior Bowl MVP. He showed quickness off of the edge and a variety of pass rushing skills. He is also a great character guy. He is sky rocketing up draft boards. He has been compared to Elvis Dumervil and LaMarr Woodley. He isn't the biggest Defensive End standing at 6-foot-2 and 263 pounds. However, he has shown he can be a disruptive force. He would be a reach, but he could find success in the scheme that made Dumervil a pro bowl player.

Round Two

Vladimir Ducasse OG from UMass

Ducasse stands at 6-foot-5 and 325 pounds. At the senior bowl, he showed a few gaps in his game. However, he also solidified that he is a talented guard. He showed the ability to get outside to make blocks, while also holding his own to the strongest defensive ends at the Bowl. He would be a nice addition to our offensive line that struggled late in the year.

Sleeper Pick: Perrish Cox CB from Oklahoma St.

Last week, I had him as a sleeper in the third round. This week he is in the second round sleeper. Next week he could be in the first round. This guy is climbing up draft boards after his great week at the Senior Bowl. He is only six foot. However, he is a shut down corner who has drawn comparisons to Antonio Cromartie. He has great playmaking ability. He could learn from Champ and Renaldo Hill. He would be our great corner for the future.

Round Three

Myron Rolle S from Florida St.

This kid would be the steal of the draft at this point. He is a first round talent. He is an extremely talented kid who is rated this low because he went to England for a year to be a Rhodes scholar. This is one of the best safety classes in draft history. There are a number of great safeties. I think Rolle is one of the best. Despite being away from the game for a year, he showed up at the Senior Bowl and impressed everyone. He showed little drop off. He is extremely smart. After being tutored by Dawkins, he could be the safety of the future for Denver.

Sleeper Pick: Tony Pike QB from Cincinnati. Dan LeFevour QB from Central Michigan.

I have wavered back and forth between Tony Pike and Dan LeFevour. They both have their positives and negatives. Dan LeFevour has had such a wide range of reports. Some say he was the best quarterback on the north team. He was pretty impressive at the Senior Bowl when he showed his skills in the game by throwing for 97 yards and a touchdown.

However, people knock on him since he worked out of the shotgun formation and he has a very average arm. Tony Pike sounds like the type of player McDaniels wants. He stands at 6-foot-6 and has an above average arm. He reads defenses well and is able to throw the ball into small windows.

He has been impressive at the Senior Bowl. However, he is only 212 pounds. He does have durability issues after needing surgery to replace a damaged a protective six-inch plate already inserted in his left (non-throwing) arm from a break occurring in 2008. Both of these players could be solid in McDaniels offense. Flip a coin as to who McDaniels would choose. Im leaning towards Pike.

Round Four

Micah Johnson ILB from Kentucky

This guy is one athletic specimen. He is 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds. He is an extremely hardhitting linebacker who has a ton of upside. He was the strongest player on his team. He missed a season due to academic reasons. He injured his MCL in his final game. If he lasts this long then whoever gets him will get one heck of a player. He is a great talent. He would be a total steal at this spot.

Sleeper Pick: Jeff Byers Center from USC.

Jeff Byers had arguably one of the best Senior Bowl performances. He is impressing scouts with his ability to play guard and center. He would probably be available in the fifth round. However, we do not have a fifth-round pick. I highly doubt that he lasts to the sixth round. So we reach for Byers here and get a quality center that is rising up on draft boards.

Round Six

LeGarrette Blount RB from Oregon

He has impressed scouts with his on field play. However, there are a lot of character questions. He will no way be available in the seventh round. With some luck, he could possibly fall to us in the sixth. While he is a risk, he does have the skills to give us another nice addition to our backfield that had a few injuries last season.

Sleeper Pick: Danario Alexander WR from Missouri

He did not have the best Senior Bowl performance. He struggled with route running and dropped too many passes. He showed weakness with changing directions. It could drop him to us. Although this is a huge stretch. Alexander is worthy of being in the top half of the draft. If he falls here, we get tremendous value. He would be a nice red zone target since he stands at 6-foot-5.

Round Seven

Zoltan Mesko P from Michigan.

His stock has fallen due to his performance. One report said that he shanks one out of every 10 punts. That is not a good number. However, he does have a boot for a leg. He would be a great pick up in the final round. It would be an upgrade over Mitch Berger.

Sleeper Pick: Mike Tepper OT from California

This is one of those no harm no foul picks. Tepper was a good tackle for Cal during his long tenure. He is a physical player who would give us depth just in case one of our tackles gets injured again. He doesn't have long arms and has gotten beaten by speedy players. However, at this point in the draft, you can't be too picky.

There you go, another mock draft is complete. The chance of correctly selecting an entire mock draft is slim to none. However, it is fun to speculate. I love to hear your opinions. A final recap of who I have us selecting in this mock draft:

Terrence Cody NT from Alabama

Vladimir Ducasse OG from UMass

Myron Rolle S from Florida State

Micah Johnson ILB from Kentucky

LeGarrette Blount RB from Oregon

Zoltan Mesko P from Michigan
