Will the 2011 Football Stars Live Up To Their Billing? Who Didn't in The Past?

Larry BurtonFeb 1, 2010

Larry Burton (PCB, Fl) So who were the big number one's according to Scout.com that teams had to have? Below are the positions, year they signed the letter of intent and the results.

1. QB—2006 Mitch Mustain—Committed to Arkansas—Left mad—Is now 3rd string at USC

2. RB—2007—Joe McKnight—Committed to USC—often injured, bringing down NCAA investigations over a free SUV and leaving USC early to try and make the NFL. Never lived up to his hype for even one whole season.

3. WR—2006—Vidal Hazelton—Committed to USC—Fell to 3rd string and left—nowhere now

4. TE—All the Tight Ends since 2002 have worked out well for their teams

5. OL—2003—Jordy Lipsey—Committed to Virginia—Never was a star, not picked by NFL

6. DT—2003—Nate Robinson—Committed to Miami—Never admitted because of grades, bounced to Rutgers, to Akron and couldn't even play semi-pro ball.

7. DE—2004—Brandon Miller—Committed to Georgia—Never a consistent starter, just a decent college career, and failed to impress in the NFL and washed out.

8. LB—2004—Willie Williams—Committed to Miami—screwed up his college career so bad they made a ballad out of his woes. He was a total bust.

9. S—Since 2002 all the safeties have worked out for their teams

10. CB—2006—Jai Eugene—Committed to LSU—Iffy career—only two starts last year

So since 2002 every position but but tight ends and safeties have had a bust.

Signing a number one recruit as you see does not make your team wealthy with talent at that position for the next four years.

More often than not, it's what your coaching staff is able to do with the boys they get, than the talent that grading services like Scout.com give to these young men.

There are no stars for character, no stars for commitment and no stars for effort. So if your team is out of the top-10 in recruiting class stars, don't fret, lots of those teams have won national championships.
