The NFL Calendar and what lies ahead

Mark ButerbaughFeb 1, 2010

The much discussed Senior Bowl is not part of the past and stocks were helped, were hurt, and many were just, well, indifferent. So as we look ahead toward the NFL Draft in April, what is still to lie ahead?  Two pretty important things lie ahead on the NFL calendar.

Feb. 7—Super Bowl, Miami.

Feb. 24-March 2—NFL combine, Indianapolis.

March 5—Free agency begins.

March 21-24—Annual owners meeting, Orlando, Fla.

These two dates are pretty damn important.  First, FEB 24 is the NFL Combine.  The NFL Combine, for any novices out there,  here is a simple explanation direct from NFL.com.

"

The 2010 Scouting Combine, which will be held from Feb. 24 to March 2, is the annual job fair for prospective new NFL players. For six days at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, players are put through a series of drills, tests and interviews with more than 600 NFL personnel including head coaches, general managers and scouts.

"

Essentially, the Combine is a show case, a place where those players entering the Draft have an opportunity to show NFL GMs and Coaches why they are ready for the NFL.  The Combine will cause a shakeup in projections, because based on performances, some players will slide down the draft, some will sky rocket up,  In other words, some players will make millions more, some will lose millions more.

It is a ton of pressure on these young players right out of college.  But, don’t feel to bad, because they should be working their tails off considering how much cash they will make.   Those that take it lightly, IE OT Andre Smith from last year, could find themselves tumbling down the draft.  Will we have another one like that?  Terrence Cody?  Stay tuned.
