Brett Favre: "I Have Nothing Left to Prove"

Jon StarJan 20, 2010

Four days before his next, and potentially last, chance at a Super Bowl berth, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre stepped in front of the media and declared, "I have nothing left to prove."

Favre addressed the media on Wednesday as his team readies to hit the road for the NFC Championship Game at New Orleans (Sun, 6:40 PM EST).  Favre's last few offseasons have been headline making to say the least as he waffled between retirement and return.

In his second "comeback," Favre has yet another opportunity to capture his long-sought second Super Bowl victory. But according to Favre, whether or not he accomplishes that goal will have no difference on his legacy.

"People may think I'm pulling their leg, but I really don't feel like there's anything left to prove," Favre said at his press conference today. "Playing 19 years . . .  people forget that I had success, I've been in the Super Bowl. I have to remind them sometimes, 'Hey, I played in the Super Bowl."

"I played so long I have to re-justify my -- I was a pretty good player before, I played in the game before, was fortunate enough to win one," he added.

The biggest knock on Favre heading into 2009 was his durability, or lack thereof, down the stretch during his one season with the Jets. He has so far responded by leading his team this far with little sign of slowing down.  His four touchdown passes in Sunday's win over Dallas in the Divisional Round is a testament to how the 40-year-old quarterback's body is holding up.

Favre faces a daunting task heading into Sunday's matchup.  Favre and the Vikings head to what will be a supercharged Superdome that will host its first NFC title game, and just the second title game appearance in Saints history. Win or lose, however, Favre feels the conclusion to his storied career will be no different.

"I just didn't play as well as I could have down the stretch," Favre said of his 2008 season. "But I really didn't feel like I had to redeem myself."
